Cool list, not quite my order but pretty damn close
Freddy mercury was and still is unriveled as a singer song writer it will take a very very talented guy to be better than him. end of story, no-one has had 85 thousand people in the palm of his hand like he did on a few occasions at wembeley etc.pure genius
Was gonna say Steve Perry for me too as soon as I saw the thread title

One of my favourite versions of Faithfully, shame sound quality isnt better tho...... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-8imszU1JSA

Freddie Mercury everytime. Pop Rocker?
Listen to the earlier stuff (Queen, Queen II, A Day at the Races, A Night at the Opera even News of the World) far far from a pop rocker.
Second to me would be Steve Tyler, then Jon Bon Jovi.

Pete I never said he was as good as Perry, just he up there around the top of my list along with a few others. Perry is defo the best for me.
Its definately a difficult thing to single out one particular artist across the whole rock range as there are songs that bring out the best and worst in most of them. As said above Freddie had an absolutely awesome voice and a cracking vocal range and he too is undoubtedly in the top few but I agree with you on the "pop rock" thing. However Rock as a genre has many of its own little sub genres if you know what I mean. Like Soft Rock, Rock Ballads, Classic Rock, Hard Rock, Classic Metal etc. Im sure if you were to answer the best of each you would have a whole variation of artists and maybe not even mention some of those you would have in your "rock" top few. I hope more folk put their opinions across cos it could have the makings for an interesting thread this one

second that , trained as an opera singer and turned into a rocker lol , easily the best live rock vocalist that has ever lived and i think it will be a long time before anyone passes his talent.
robert plant is also very good , and as my upto date choice the leader singer of the editors , very strong and very different sounding , also depeche modes front man.
cheers paul

Don't Stop Beleivin' is one of my most-played on iPod/iTunes and now, thanks to your link I discover the vocalist is a BLOKE!!!
Up till now I always imagined it was a husky-voiced bird!!!!
Next, I'll probably discover Meat Loaf has been miming for years! He isn't as good live now as he was, but he still puts on a show. His duet with Pavarotti showed his voice wasn't as powerful as I'd always believed, though.

Too hard to name just one, as there's so many different types for different styles and I like them for different reasons!
A few that spring to mind - Bruce Springsteen (Bruce Springsteen), James Hetfield (Metallica), Axl Rose (Guns N Roses), Sebastian Bach (Skid Row), James LaBrie (Dream Theater), Phil Anselmo (Pantera), Mikael Ĺkerfeldt (Opeth), Freddie Mercury (Queen) Meatloaf (Meatloaf), Bruce Dickinson (Iron Maiden)
Out of the above, I'd be TEMPTED to lean to Seb Bach for POSSIBLY my all round fave, because he has an amazing voice, with amazing range/power/diversity, and he's an all round perfect hard rock/metal band frontman!
But for the same reasons, so is Bruce Dickinson! And Metallica wouldn't be MEtallica without James Hetfield's immense voice, likewise Gun's N Roses wouldn't have worked without Axl, etc etc...

James Hetfield all the way. Just listen to his voice on 'Carpe Diem Baby' FUCKING AWESOME!!!
But Robert Plant and Roger Daltrey are also up there with James Hetfield!!!
