Default Anyone up on Mini Superchargers ?

Been seeing lots of these things on e-bay selling quite cheaply and was wondering how adaptable they are to other engines.

Anyone know much about them ?

Its an Eaton M45, perfectly suitable for using on something else, you can buy adaptors for the inlet and outlet to get normal pipework onto them easily.

They are good for around 200bhp, you need to get the gearing right though.

On something like a Zetec motor you would want to be gearing it about 2.5:1 so it spins quick enough when the engine is only doing about 7K rpm, obviously if using it on a bike enough though by comparison you would get it more like 1.5:1

Toyota 4AGE as it has the additional pulley on the crank that was for the power steerig, but when RWD'd its 'available'

Its 1600 like the minis, the injectors are in the head so no need to mod anything and I think it would fit nicely in the space.

Have you done anything with them then Chip ? or is this just info stored in your Wiki-like-Melon ?

Ive looked into them a lot as I was going to use one myself, but Its still sat on the shelf at the moment complete with the adaptors I mention.

What diameter is the pulley on the 4AGE?

You'll want to aim for about 2.5:1 ratio on that engine, as you're obviously going to want to run the pretty much charger flat out.

I did have all the flow graphs knocking around somewhere for the M45 from when I was looking into it, but cant find them at the moment as it was a couple of years ago now.

Practical performance car magasine has been running a feature on an Eaton M45 'charged 1600 crossflow in an RWD lotus 7 type thing. I think he was estimating about 110-120bhp

Cool... If that is taking a standard crossflow from 70'ish bhp to 110-120 thats one helluva increase for a bolt on mod

How were they doing the fueling ? sucking through a carb ?

What RPM are you calling flat out?

Im working on the figure of 18Krpm as flat out, which they are reliable at.
Ive heard of people running them at WELL over that though.

How much boost do they make on the mini as standard ?

The old Shorrock I had on my Anglia van used to work at 7-8psi which I guess is about half atmosphere, and with that I had to do nothing to the standard engine, just stop the dizzy going to full advance.

Mini cooper S revs up to 7000rpm (slightly less actually). Boost wise I think it is about 5-6psi standard. With the reduced pulley probably nearer 8-10psi?

iirc it was approx 18k, and the tip coatings came off the rotors after about a couple of hours running, may even have nudged a little over that rpm at times.

You are correct the 4AGZE is a blown version of the 4AGE but its only available on import so its quite a rare and expensive beast.

Much cheaper to buy a MkI MR2 motor for £100 and a new blower for £250 and mackle something up

the later 5h gen 'chargers are the ones to go for

They have black rotors not the silver ones!

ahhh fair enough.
Have you got a mk1 yet? They seem to be quite popular and people hold onto them.
The 3.0 v6 conversion has been done quite a lot using the 5vz-fe (might not have the letters exacty right!!) Camry engine and it fits into the mk1 too, but the performance is disappointing. Only about 200bhp as standard, less than the mk2 turbos/3sgte.
I wanted to s/c mine, but apparently its not worth it, id be better off dropping the tubby engine in it instead. Shame!

The good ones are holding their value but there are loads of them just too rotten to bother about and people are breaking them all the time.

The 4AGE is a cracking little motor, often referred to as the Japanese BDA on the account of the number of striking similarities between the two engines.

So not looked at anything else, these little engines go lovely in an Anglia.
