I was looking at upgrading my 320GB hard disk in my PS3, but the cost between 2.5" and 3.5" drives is quite a bit the larger you go.

That coupled with the fact should I ever need to change my PS3 for any reason, I will still have my audio and videos.

So, Ive decided to go NAS and stream from there.

Can anyone recommend a good caddy for this. Would be nice to have it act as a print server as well, although not essential. It would be primarily used to stream HD content to the PS3 and maybe as an iTunes library.

I've seen them as little as £30 and as much as £800. Not fussed about it being a torrent server as well, although this would probably come as part of the package anyway.

Saw one about £80 that looked quite good, but wondered what you guys use.

i have a QNAP TS-101 as it came pre-loaded with the server software for my squeezebox music system, but it's a bit old hat now. looking to upgrade it sometime and would definitely consider a QNAP again as it has worked flawlessly for years and is a nice design and runs silently.

 

I have a D-Link DNS-323 which does everything you want - haven't tested it with a PS3 but should work. Hasn't given me a problem yet

 

whtever you get, look to put ps3 media server on there as it's supposedly very good

 

Yep decided on the qnap, ts-100, £107 delivered, then will put a 1.5tb in.

Job jobbed.

Problem I have now is that it is impossible to get my hd video off my ps3 as all are over 4gb, and external drives are only supported by fat32.

Gutted.



Yes I know I could decrypt the hard drive, but would take too long. So might keep the 320gb and just get the NAS as well!

 

did you research how difficult it can be to put additioanl software such as that i mentioned onto some QNAP NAS'?

you don't actually need anything else necessarily as they come pre-loaded with twonkyvision that will serve stuff up to your ps3, but may not be compatible with all video file types

 

A chap at work has one, and it does what I need it to...

But thanks for your input chap, they seem very good boxes and I guess you get what you pay for!



Edit to say: decided one the ts-110 as the 100 is old hat now ...

 

I just use my main pc with Nero 9 ultimate installed, Nero Mediahome 4 is really user friendly. Or am I way off?

 

not way off at all, just depends what you prefer. a QNAP NAS is small, neat and tidy and runs silently with no fans and with potentially less power consumption than a full pc.

 

I was streaming using Tversity, dunno if that helps or not..
(I suspect I'm in over my head here.)

No, not at all, this is what I used before, great piece of software.

With the NAS box, it just sits there running linux in a small self-contained unit, fit whatever drive you want upto 2 terabytes, and that will act as a media server so no pc's need to be on.

Also does many other things, like camera surveillance, ftp server, can host websites from it, does all your torrent downloads for you amongst many other things.

Its being delivered tomorrow, but no-one will be in.

Gutted.

But this is for my usage, this is a bare enclosure so you need to put in a SATA hard drive also. Redundancy is something else you might want to think about.

If you have no clue in these things, then its best to speak to someone who knows about them and discuss what you want to achieve.

Me? I will be no good, as I have just had my qnap delivered and not even loaded it with a fat drive yet!
