the last time we was trying to test a starter so had it sat on the battery whilst it was charging withj couple bits wire to the starter
i know duurrrr lol

the covers on the top of the battery they are usually 6 screw caps or 1 big rectangle cap. These need to be removed before charging or the gasses build up inside and as you now know explode!
it wuold be your fault if you didnt take the vent caps
of mate,
that was very luckyit didnt do anymore
a member of this site had his 3 door cossie go up in flames as
he didnt take the vent caps of the battery.

ya also have to leave the batt for a hour or so after chargin otherwise they can go bang is ya use it straight away
so rember children, go to halfords say batt is fooked and let one of them monkeys take the risk, collec the following day to either a brand new bat foc or a freshly charged bat thats ready for ya car
oh and NO battery in my halfords has ever been charged with the vent removed, infact a guy once spilled batt acid on his hand and actualkly asked me what he should do as its stinging his hand

Had that happen to me on an LDV when I was in iraq

dont know how true this is but ive been told if your battery dont
hold charge tip the acid out in to a try re fill with battery acid
and charge it for 12 hours and it will last for at least another
2 years, my mate told me this and says he has done it aswell.
remember take the bloody vent tops of if it's not a sealed battery

Never tried that but it could give a little life to a fucked battery.
Most failures are due to sulphation of the lead plates. As the plates decay they are less effective and parts of the plate may actually fall and settle in the bottom. What can happen is the cell is shorted by lead pieces, so tipping them out may help a little but the battery will not be rejuvenated.
