As title, stuck 80 miles from home and my gearbox is fucked , is it worth trying to limp it or will it seize? Mondeo diesel mk2

I struggled an Orion 1600 ghia back from Coventry with no gearbox oil - bearings seized on the shift mechanism and locked it in 5th, whined like a whore and conked out after about 90 miles

It will go until it stops.

80 miles and you'll cook it for sure.

a tow costs XX, a new gearbox costs XX. Which one is cheaper?

if the box is already fucked you got nothing to loose. can ou not even get some water in there if its goosed?

may help keep temps a bit lower.

or engine oil if you got any in the boot?

Why not?

Sounds like there's a handy access hole!

rhys, if there is a hole in the casing i suspect wil may have a bigger problem than just no oil.

but it sounds like it will still drive, and if its fucked, nothing to loose!

A seal and fucked are two very different prices.

I did this once with a head gasket. Limped home. Little did I know that I was adding oil to the sump safely but the gasket was conveniently adding coolant to the sump as well.

Bye bye bottom end.

If you are going to stuff a new box in there drive it granny style to home. You still might need a tow anyway and now you have a really fucked box. Just trying to be the voice of reason.

Well, got 50 miles and had to stop...... was touching cloth and only just made services

there is a nice big hole in the bottom of the box, hence no oil. Car is going in the scrapper soon anyway so nothing to loose, just enjoying pretending I have a bara box in it, it's whining like a bastard now

soon as I have finished downloading I will go for the last 25-30 miles, and if I fail the AA will be collecting me again!

Anyone got an M5 for sale?

lol, i do have some somewhere but on the other pc.

it was still going strong except for getting it into gear.

sadly the heat and wear on the cogs, they could not be re-used, that was an expensive mistake that was.

ok, so if you had a big hole in it, what the feck made that hole?

as one would assume that something has to have failed for it to make a hole and loose oil. therefore it would possibly not be drivable?

obv it is lol.

I know of a 21T that did around 300 miles with a gearbox that had a gaping big hole in the back of it where one of the shafts had knocked a hole in it - there was gearbox oil all over the underside of the car and non in the box - needless to say it did whine a bit but happily did 70+ from Swansea to Liverpool! lol

I know this is a thread about gearbox oil, but there are loads of vids on youtube of old civics being redlined with no engine oil at all until they seize, good vids to watch if you're as bored as me!

IM BACK ...

Right, story is as follows...

two weeks ago leaving work to go home (I'm in the RAF so work 80 miles away from home, commute weekly) my wrecker I smoke around in, the mondeo, looses all its gears. I get recovered the 80 miles home by the AA, as I have a carfull of stuff I need to get home. I assumed it was the gearbox, and was going to scrap the car as it is shit anyway ...

Mate says there is a common problem on the Mk2 mondy, where the gear selector roll pin falls out, easy fix as you can take it out from the top of the box, without dropping anything . So I rip it apart, and lo and behold it is the rollpin/bolt.

Mate fixes it free, and says it will go, but there is a chance that the debris will hit the crownwheel, and it will go between that and the casing and put a hole in it, but if you are lucky it will have stuck to the magnet in the bottom of the box.....No easy way to try and get it out, so can take the chance it will be ok as its not worth the time/hassle of dropping and draining the box to see if it comes out..

So put it all back together, and done about 300 miles without a problem, but tonight it decided to exit the box on the M4, as I was on my way to Brighton to pick up an exhaust for my saff ... Was just going into guildford when it went, so turned around and made it back to Lyneham ...

need a new car now though, saves me putting it through the MOT next month .. Gears are hard to get, but seems to be driving ok if a little sluggish, might chem metal the hole and dump some oil in it, see what happens

Couldn't be fucked waiting 3 hours for the AA and the 56mph drive back, the car cost Ł300 in march, so don't really care about it!!

I went to national day in about '96 in an erst with very little gearbox oil. Getting near to the circuit I had a tear up with a 3dr and when I went to slow down, I couldnt get it out of fifth. eventually with both hands wrenched it out of gear and got into the circuit. Took it dead easy on the way home. Once home stripped the box and put new bearings and selector forks, box lives on to this day!

When me and my best mate were 18 we had two similar 1.5 civics that we used to abuse. His was driven flat out for thousands of miles with an increasingly noisy box and when we replaced it with a box from another 1.5 I had crashed, the original box from his car was bone dry!!

So either the last few miles on it coincided with that happening, or it had been dry for ages which I think is the more likely option!
