Default Best Digital Cameras - amateur

My wife is wanting to get into photography so I have agreed to get her a digital camera for xmas.

I dont think SLR would be the best until she gets more experience

so a good compact is what I am looking for - but I know very little (in fact nowt) about photography.

I am thinking 10x optical zoom, 10 to 12 MP 3" screen li-ion batteries.

she wants to do scenery in Scotland/Wales and birds of prey which is another thing we are getting in to.

Has anyone any good buys in mind - or experience good or bad

thanks David

Canon G10 i think it is now.

I have G7 and its an awesome camera with quite a few settings that she can get her teeth into before she gets a DSLR.

if she really wants to get into then it's probably best to go straight to a dslr, but if it's likely to be just a fad and you don't want to spend that much i would recommend something that has most of the features of a dlsr like aperture, shutter speed, control etc, but without the expense of lenses, hassle of carrying them, at less cost etc.

something like this is great value for money and will allow her to learn a lot:

I agree, the small digital cameras only have auto modes, where as cameras like the fujifilm that foreigneRS sugested would be much more worth while.

But going straight into D-SLR would be a wise move if she's serious about photography.

Yep the Fujis are great to learn on. Basic enough to start with but enough features to keep learning with. Very reliable cameras too, I used mine in some pretty horrific weather at rallys and never had a problem.

Brilliant camera I just leave mine on IA (Intelegent Auto) setting and pics and vids come out really well

Video Taken my TZ7:

2 Pictures take on my TZ7 (Bare in mind these were taken in a garage @ 11pm, so only garage lighting used):

(This on is a bit blurry as the car was on axle stands and I had to hold it above head height, so hand was not steady)

Amazon was the cheapest place I found @ £250. Now selling @ £240 - http://www.amazon.co.uk/Panasonic-Lu...6116874&sr=8-1
