Default Mk5 Golf Owners / people who might know

I have just noticed that the intermittent wiper on my car is not very intermittant at all

Now either I'm being a total spoon, or its not working right?

If I click the wiper onto the setting it wipes once. Then won't do it again unless I change the speed. But even then it will only do it once. If I move the stalk so it is doing the back window too, it occasionly makes the front work.

I have tried it on every speed setting and nothing. Another thing I have noticed is if you have the wipers on, they stop when I stop. Now I've only tried the intermittant when I'm parked up, since when I'm driving the screen gets so I can't see before it wipes. Maybe it doesn't work when your parked up?

Anybody any ideas? Is this a common fault?

Is your model fitted with Rain Sensors ?? ie , when you look at the top of the screen ( from the outside ) where the rear view mirror is located is there a kind of box fitted ??

If so then " 1 click up " on the stalk will be the " auto " setting and will only wipe the screen when the sensor is sufficiently covered in water .

All Mk5 Golf fitted with rain senitive wipers will stop wiping the screen constantly when you are stopped and switch to Auto and then resume a normal wipe when you set off again if I remember correctly .

Right! When I go outside I'll have a look!

I have had the window covered with water and they didn't wipe though...

Might do a few tests with buckets of water

LOL - you'll be surprised at how little water makes it up as far as the sensor compared to the amount on the part you are " trying " to look through !!! - shite idea / location for the sensor tbh

Not as far as I know mate . The auto wipers have always been shite on VW as it almost has to be pissing down for them to register that it's raining . On my old GT Sport 170 I just used to forget the auto function and just use the next click up on the stalk to put them on " Normal Intermittant " as they were more trouble than they are worth . Somebody on a specific VW forum may be able to advise on a fix though ??

Not got a clue mate I just drove the fucker LOL

I would imagine so though - Expect the extra " go " was down to Engine management TBH - did go well for a standard diesel " smoker " though
