I've got a VERY low biting point, literally as soon as you let off the floor

Replaced quadrant and pawl on pedal
Replaced clutch cable

The quadrant and self adjuster is working spot on.
I have tried whacking spacers along the clutch cable to triple check that there is no stretch (or the new ones are too long etc)

And still the low biting point remains. So this says to me clutch or release bearing. Any other ideas? And what could have gone wrong clutch wise?
It still goes through all the gears perfectly. Its just very hard to get into gear but that might be because of the bite point as well....

sounds like the quadrant is faulty, if the biting point is low, then it doesn't mean a worn clutch, the opposite infact.
when you only need to breathe on the pedal at the top indicates clutch worn.

 

But as i've said above the quadrant is working perfectly. The old one was in top condition as well. I simply removed it and put a new one in due to the fact i had it all out and i dont ever want to have to piss about with the pedal box ever again,lol

Not the clutch......... quadrant too small, cable too long, or clutch arm (on gearbox) has been moved round on it's splines.

 

Quadrant is exactly the same as the original! So its really not the quadrant (for once)
The cable is brand new and the same length as the old (which was fine up until last week when this happened)

So i'm 100% sure its not the quadrant or cable. I know mk5/6 escorts clutch arms are prone to twisting/bending. It looks fine externally but that doesn't mean it hasn't moved internally (as per karlos's suggestion)

 

It's a strange one mate thats for sure! lol
Be careful driving if it's hard to get in to gear as you'll soon find your gearbox dead.............. i know from experience

 

Yer i think i'll be whipping the box off tomorow night. I'm hopeing its just a fooked pressure plate or bearing. The clutch itself must be fine as theres no slipping etc! Bloody cars

 

how long has this problem been around, did you alter anything recently before the problem started?
sounds like cable has slipped off quadrant, i know you say it is perfect but it's not making sense.
the cable is not tensioned enough.

 

Only started last week. Hadn't touched anything.

I've whipped the box off this eve and the clutch and pressure plate are totally intact. The release bearing is very sticky and needs a fair bit of force to spin the bearings as well. Don't know if this is whats caused it

 

is it not a weak pressure plate, i thought when it was a high biting point that it was shot

 

go back to the quadrant etc, make sure everything is sat how it should be.

as above a worn clutch means a high biting point.

 

Weak pressure plate would just make it slip easier.

 

sounds like clutch to me you dont alwways get slipping from a knackered clutch mate and also biting point can be very low or very high with a knackered clutch it all depends on the vehicle, clutch type , clutch fault etc... my rs was exactly same fault as yours when i got it low biting and sometimes difficult to select gears , changed clutch and hey presto biting normal and gears easy to select (as easy as they can be for the escorts soup stirrer)

 

mine is biteing at the bottom i thought maybe the ratchet may have slipped! going to buy new clutch and get the pedle upgrade so hopfully i wont have to muck about with the poxy ratchet again

Thought that would be the case mate. Glad you got it sorted an are back on the road! Unfortunatley lots of sunday mechanics on here giving wrong advice!
