Default Restoring My Sapphy 'Project Moneypit' *update 15/01/2011-winter tinkering*

Well, some of you may know my car....

since i rebuilt the engine last year, she has been given a considerable amount of abuse, seeing as i bought her to use, not hide in the garage.

however, i lapse in concentration resulted in me clipping a stone wall in july...

Results of that are a scratched bumper, written off wing, 2 doors and scarred up rear quarter

no chance of insurance, as the age, value and difficulty in sourceing genuine spares from dealers would have written her off. so the time has come, i am going to be doing a full body strip down, see what nastys the plastics are hiding and getting it all fixed up and ready for a good few more years on the road

i also feel its a good time to sort out a load of niggly faults that she has had for a while
  • the massive intercooler blocking the cooling air to the rad
  • the transmission vibration above 110mph, from either the prop or front shafts
  • the constant battle with the misfire goblins
  • My clutch slipping above 21psi
hopefully , i plan to have her back driving by June, REady for the Moors Tour, but if it takes longer so be it

first job was getting her into the garage, which i finally cleared out and got carpetted with some free stuff my mum was ditching

i'll try and keep it updated as i progress

can u explain what this 'transmission vibration over 110mph' is. Myn begins to vibrate at around 115mph. and i was thinking about stripping it down and inspecting. but if this is a common problem, it would save me alot of time if anyone knows what causes it.

also shame about the scuff m8. looks like a really nice saff. and good man for using it

also nice bike always fancied a DMR but could never afford

What a shame about the damage... but well done for taking the opportunity to go to town on it. Will be keeping an eye on this!

Thanks peeps

M4tt247 - basically, i shakes its tits off once your in 3 figure speeds, i've got a new prop donut ready to fit, was going to refurb and balance both props and get my shafts checked. i would of thought it was wheel balance, but it does it regardless of wheel choice

Had all my seats and carpet out this evening, only to find one of my seat mounts has succumbed to the down stuff, pretty much. oh well, suppose i better get used to find that lol

Think i may have seen it down Bude maybe parked near to the newsagents not far from the falcon hotel pic ?
If you see a white Sapph parked next to the Brendan arms soon, that will probably be mine !
Cheers Andy..

little update. spent a few hours on her over the weekend, and i'm now at the stage of having the engine and box out the way with the removal of 8 bolts and the use of a couple jacks

interior has been all stripped out......

however, that has led to the first bits of rust showing thier ugly heads lol
drivers seat mount

drivers side rear footwell

also found over Ł3 in change that will help pay for all this
old 10p

not a lot to a sierra with no bumper!

the powerhouse

another breakdown in the waiting :S sure there was a clip on there!!

hopefully have the running gear and rear beam off this week, then the fun begin

Anyone give me advice on the correct way of tackling the underside. i'm not after a concours look, but it would be nice to have it looking nice

I'm about to drop all the running gear off of mine and clean up underneath, I've been told satin shark grey paint, as its not porous (spell) like primer, then overspray magenta around the edges,

And break pipes use landrover forest green, to make them look like new

Ive found this stuff on the net, i reckon it could be good for doing car undersides with as its made to be very tough for truck bed use, so should be a good product ??

http://www.u-pol.com/countries/en/navigate.htm its under products on the left handside then specialists coatings, raptor liner black.

Little update

went to Essex with my mate to pick up his new 200sx yesterday so didn't get anything done. decided to work like a demon today

Engine box and subframe are now dropped on the deck, ready to be pulled out the way and stored at work, once i can get the shell 4 inches higher. Prop and exhaust are off, fuel tank, rear bumper and pump are off. and i have found more rust

i knew it was getting a little brown on the sil, but its one of those things you put to the back of your mind lol

no matter, though. new sill on the way, once the rear beam is off, it's time to get jiggy with the wire brushes and scrapers..

engine in

engine out...

nsr sill

osr sill

nsr floor, near bumper bracket

mainly solid rear panel

tank

rot free chassis leg

the next hurdle...

cheers for reading

A little update....

Progress has slowed down, due to 2 things: The massively tedious job of removing all the underseal from a large car, and my the earache my missus has been giving me about focusing on my preperation for RAF selection in January (which is fair enough lol)

but i have been able to get in a hour here and there, a few times a week...

Finally got my rear beam off, so have been able to start doing the underseal it was blocking

20 year old ford underseal, 3-4 mil thick in places. its a wonder these things can rust at all

rear end, mainly cleaned up

stripped floor

oily mess, this is some after market sealent thats been put on. done the hjob, but a proper pain to get off. hardsuch chips off fine, but the softer bits are going to require petrol and elbow grease

Me, enjoying my sunday afternoon

Once its all done, the holes will be welded up, brown bits removed and/or treated and the whole floor zinc or etch primed. then this stuff is going on...

Upol Raptor loadliner. should take the knocks and bumps suffieciently. and is also tintable, so will come out Moonstone Blue with the addition of a bit of base coat

cheers for reading, sorry its not the most interesting post

Great progress. I've been through the same hard work getting the undersealing off so I know exactly how you feel. But trust me, it's definitely worth it in the end even though I was so close giving the whole shit up. Just use our time and don't rush it, sure it will be a minter when done
