Do other CD's work in your computer? i.e. Music CD, or other CD's such as applications etc.

Is the disc you have been supplied definitely a CD and not a DVD? As in you are 100% categorically certain that it is a CD not DVD.

As it would stand to reason your CD drive not recognising the disk if the disk was in fact a DVD.

I'd say the CD didn't write properly, or it was formatted in a way your PC can't decode.

I reckon the disc is damaged. Have you tried it in another computer? If it works in another machine try reburning them to another disc or use a memory stick

There's no reason for it not to play. Put it in a friends PC and see if it can be read, if so copy the data off it onto a memory stick. If it can't be read, or the data copied, it's fucked.
