hi there i have a 1996 escort cos and it has a breather system that claerly is not doing anything at all it has a port on the bottom that appears to go some where on the block and then has 2 more ports coming off but have no hoses on them so they are both venting to atmosphere surely this is not how its meant to be also the volt meter on the bannana pod doesnt work any ideas on that one aswell thank you in advance

 

The breather should have the two top hoses connected, one normally goes to a dedicated area on the cam cover, after it has been drilled and a fitting put in, the hole is already there just needs drilling through, the other pipe goes to the kidney box area under the inlet manifold.
You should also have a much larger pipe on the underside of the breather tank this just goes down to atmosphere, the one you have at the mo going to the side of the block really needs going to a fixing that is below oil level, as it is just a breather at the mo, but is actually intended to be a return for the oil that collects, you can get sump plug adaptors so it can return through there.
Not sure about the volt meter, but would not hurt to take out and have a look at gauge.

i only have 3 ports in total on my breather i understand now where the top 2 should go its just the bottom one i dont understand as if i vent that to atmosphere then what happens to the one that is already attached to the bottom sorry if im being a twat

 

If it's a 3 port breather, the lower port will be either atmosphere vent if large, it will also go into the breather tank almost all the way up to touching the underside of the top, in effect a tube within the tank, if just welded to the bottom it is a drain, so goes to the sump below oil level, the other two one goes to kidney box/area, the other one can be used on block breather other side or to the rocker cover, there is a dedicated place that can be drilled and tapped once cover is removed.
Another option is to get another spout welded on so you can breath from both sides of the block and the rocker cover.
