Default Anyone any good with wrx imports?

My mate has a 92 wrx and it has a problem heres goes any advice would be great to help him stop spending on the fooker and getting no where

When the car has sat for a day or 2 and is cold when you first drive it it goes like fookBUT when it warms up it holds back still drives well but just aint got the boost that it should be doinghe has changed all the sensor's and the wiring loom just incase a broken wire etc etc do you have any other susjestions of what it can bei have just spoke to Andy Napier (AWD in perthshire)and he says it could possibly be the turbo maybe seezing up when warm (but it still boosts and looking at the boost gauge working as normal) also Andy said it could be the feuling but as i said the car still runs fine just holds back my mate thought it could be coil packs but not wanting him to go buying more and no progress on the problem he has tried everyone to help him but up here there aint many people Andy is good with the scoobs but once again not wanting to go through to perth to find it could be something right in front of our eyes that my mate hasnt checked yet any advice would be great thanks for taking the taking to read this

air flow meter?
apparently they are bad for going and have similar syptoms to what that sounds like, and even more likely if hes got an aftermarket filter on it.

the connector was on the hose to the cone, i'm pretty sure. it kept popping off and sometimes the car cut out and sometimes it just banged and had less boost.

ok craig no cel light is not good sign means its most likely been chipped badly

with those mods it would need at the very least a decent chip or ideally a remap, blow off valve check that for operation too has it got a manual boost controller?
it does sound like the classic scooby setup just waiting for a big bang

edited to add the cel light will be disconnected because of the chip making it stay on all the time only problem is then if there is a problem u don't have a working cel light to warn you.
if there are no other obvious things wrong ie: pipes off ect then i would seriously look at getting a better chip, especially if its a old one, i have a spare early 4 pin ecu for Ł30 as well.
you need to find out which turbo it has td05 or td04 then u can get a chip to suit.

oh its had a remap? must be old piggy back board if its messing with the cel

i would try a standard ecu just to see if you get same symptoms or a run on a rolling road which will cost money

they buggers for bad earths too

real pain to trackdown, also get bad heat soak which leads to the ecu knocking off the boost.
wish him luck and the guys on scooby net pretty helpfull too they get plenty practice with tech issues

Have you checked the Air Flow Meter yet? The symptoms ar spot on for that. Unplug it and see if it changes anything, like running the same cold or warm?

i have had loads of jap spec subarus, some direct of the boat and they have not been remapped, the advice i got off teg sport (they deal with prodrive) was run it on super and use octane booster if your gonna use it hard,no probs with that advice here Craig.

also regards the car not running correctly my mate had a direct import that started doing that and it had just come off the boat and it was a fooked actuator, put a good second hand one on from a specialists and the car ran right and did the Bizzo

alright Craigy matey,i have had coilpacks go on the early wrx's and its just a miss, they sound like they are missing anyway but they don't like die and then pick up or start ok then tail off. constant annoying miss is a coilpack.

they do suffer with the coilpack on sparkplug, there normally cracked by people tightening them up incorrectly. To check them, remove the coilpack, pull the rubber plug boot of the end & see if there is any cracking.
As said, maf can cause a problem, sometimes they can be repaired.

ECU reset can be done by disconnecting the battery. Have you checked for fault codes because they show up the check engine light when the MAF goes?

Get a wideband on it and it will be very obvious if its a fuelling problem or not.

If it isnt then its probably the knock sensor pulling out timing, its probably on the verge of det when cold and then when hot its tipping it over the edge.

If it was the coilpack or similar it would feel more like a misfire generally rather than just feeling lame and flat and generally gutless.
