Default Airbox or Filter

I have noticed alot of people run airboxes on their cars rather than cone style filters....

I currently have a group a filter on mine but thats what came on the car when I bought it.

I was just wondering if there was any advantages or disadvantages of having an airbox over a cone filter or is it just personal preference?

RS500 airbox for me

Used to have an Escort Cosworth airbox and before that a cone filter.

I changed to an airbox because i think it looks a lot more tidy in the engine bay than a filter

If you're ever about bangor give me a shout and you can look at mine, see what you think.

The cone filters sound miles better. With a air box you wont get heat soke.

Airbox for sure if its bhp your chasing, cone filters just suck in hot air from the manifold/turbo/rad...even with a HUGE fan on the rollers you should feel the heat from the turbo/manifold on boost if you put your hand over the filter....i've saw gains of 15bhp from just using a standard air box.

Yeah cos that fan is gonna replicate a car doing high speeds in the real world.

Ever stood infront of the fan at ava? it's probably not that far off.....and were not just talking about high speeds here. How hot was your cone filter when you were at high speed? oh aye that's right you cant put your hand on it whilst your driving can you!

The horsepower gain must of been our imagination.

im not telling anyone to change theres, just what I have experienced

I ended up running a cone filter in a enclosed box, best of both worlds the noise and airflow of a cone filter without the heat issue.

An Escort airbox gets a bit limited at 800+bhp .
These tests were done years back, makes no difference whatsoever to heat soak etc. Use a filter to cope with your Power or you will end up with a very cool but restrictive air filter system.

Cut the front of the box out if you want noise

My cut Escort box was just as loud as the cone filter!

Def a airbox. Looks miles better than the scrappy cones. But I love the standard look, so

This is my old set up air came in from a hole in the inner wing and the headlight duct, and vented out through half the bonnet vent.
