tbh i think its kinda crap they have been given a 5 place penalty for not slowing down under yellows, i know its a safety thing but it was the only flying lap of the session coz of red flags. IMO under those circumstances qualifying should have been extended to allow anyone who hadn't completed a flying lap to do so.

What really stupid is that they didn't have a lap in the bag before, and really stupid that some professional and experienced drivers didn't lift when they seen a yellow, and debris strewn all over the track. They are lucky to get away so lightly,

by the book even lifting would have given them there fastes time in that section! Therefor breaking the rules.

They should have lifted, full stop. If they had lifted, there would be no penalty. Whether they had a fast lap in the bag or not is of no concequence, that's their problem. Suppose some debris that got picked up by a tyre, and hit another driver, or marshall, how would have been then, the rule is there for safety, not to piss of teams or drivers. dangerous things happen when parts fly off cars at 150 mph, remember the Massa incident,

under yellow flags , you cannot post a better time in that section, but that was the "only time" they went through, so lifting ??hoe would that help??

yellow flags are there for a reason. lap times or no lap times, safety comes first!

ignoring drivers that ignore basic safety instructions is simple impossible, so he got away lightly!

No, but I see where your coming from. If they had lifted, they would not have recieved a penalty, but would have lost the lap. It's the commentators that have incorrectly described the rule, they can check if they lifted by the sound recording, then a team can appeal the discission using telemetry. They were lucky to get away with losing 5 grid positions. They did not, but should have a banker lap done, run earlier in the session to save tyres for the race on Sunday, as Suzuka is hard on tyres

you guys are focusing too much on the competition element. a yellow flag exists for SAFETY it's not to penalise somebody, and tactics should never come into play around it.

I beg your pardon, I did say it was a safety issue, Post # 11

What was really stupid was that the team let the Brawns sit in the garage until they could only do one flying lap. I was saying at the time if anything goes wrong on that lap, they're stuffed. It did and they were.

They should have gone out 90secs earlier and done 2 flyers just in case.
