Default What would it cost to build a brand new car at home?

I was thinking about this last night, I wondered how much it would cost to buy a new car in bits and build it yourself at home. Not a new shell with second hand parts, but say for instance a brand new Focus ST shell from Ford, crate engine, new interior, all new clips and trim pieces, fluids, everything needed to make a shell into a running car but bought from dealer.

Interesting question, probably no definitave answer though unless anyone fancies tallying it up?

Paul

I reckon it would cost an absolute fortune!! Dont forget these things are mass produced!!

Just think the engine alone brand new would be circa 1.5-2k, I dont think it would be possible to build a car for anything near the RRP.

i know a guy (not that well) just seen him at a few meets, and he built a complete Jag E type, with a new shell and a new engine and its the newest E Type as it was registerd in 1985 or something
but he used some second hand parts and did the work himself but he recons it cost him like Ł50,000 back then

As above, markup on parts at the dealer alone would be ridiculous, plus you'd have to buy tools, get it registered, get it painted, and it's still be a ford.

In 1989 I worked in the parts dept of a Peugeot dealer, when you could buy a basic 205 for about Ł6k.
In a moment of boredom we started to add up what it would cost in parts and we gave up at Ł20k and we had nowhere near enough parts!

The great man himself, Mr Henry Ford, devised the moving production line as the way to make the automobile affordable for the ordinary man. That principle remains so now.

My XR4i was built from a shell with a donor car, and a mixture of old and new parts and still cost about the same as a brand new mondeo would cost. It may be more, but the wife may find this post!!!

If you went and paid full retial price on every part at your ford dealer I bet it would be at least a quarter of a million quid to build a ford focus.

i actually priced this on a jaguar xkr in 1999 when they first came out ,the retail price for the car from the dealer was Ł56k or there abouts but to biuld it from parts would cost Ł360k not including paint and labour
