Can't find anything that says they are illegal, though there do seem to be cases of Producers and even prohibition Notices for folk with them, but I did find this:
Headlights on new vehicles must produce white light, according to both ECE and SAE standards. Previous ECE regulations also permitted selective yellow light, which from 1936 until 1993 was required on all vehicles registered in France. Yellow headlights are no longer required anywhere, but remain permitted in France, Belgium, The Netherlands, Switzerland, Japan, New Zealand, and some other countries.

No idea if that is a law or not though.

Used to see cars all the time with yellow headlights in the early 90's. The only car in recent years that ive seen them with was my old mans MkV Cortina about 10 years ago that had yellow bulbs. Never had any bother.

Is it illegal to drive with foglights on if they are yellow?
Ive got yellow ones on the mr2 (standard on import models, from which my bumper and lights are off) and usually have them switched on with my headlights. Theyre no brighter than the headlights.

I dont think they will fail an mot as long as the beam is correct etc, VOSA/police may take a dim view though, as you are not supposed to fit any bulbs in your headlamps that they were not originally designed for. This is where those HID kits become illegal too!

The Highway Code (Rule 94) says you must not drive with any foglights on except in conditions of seriously reduced visibility. That is defined in Rule 201 as "generally when you cannot see for more than 100 metres (328 feet)".

Apart from that, inappropriate use of foglights can be annoying to other road users and always gives me a laugh at the people who think having foglights is somehow either cool or effective.

Makes no odds. If the visibility isn't impaired as described above you are commiting an offence. Why would you want to drive about with fogs on when it's not foggy.

I'm no angel, and will admit I used to do it loads on my old XR2i. When I got my FRST I don't think I even turned them on other than for MOT's

Why not??
2 sets of lights are better than 1. As ive said, they arent bright anyway so would be no use in fog.

My headlights and sidelights are in different places-does that make me look like a laughable twat too then??

Thanks for the info-ill switch them off and replace with bright bulbs to use in fog.

In fog, lights are to be seen with, not to see, the brighter they are the less you can see generally, after a point!

probably more useful to fit decent bulbs and wire them upto your main beam circuit so that on main beam you have an extra set of lights, rather than driving around with them doing nothing but advertising you to the 5-0 as a muppet! :nerner:

Fog lights are not supposed to be bright. They are supposed to be low and aimed at the floor to light the road straight infront of you to aid you driving at low speed through thick fog, something that a headlight can't do. I can't say I have ever been dazzled by a pair of oncoming fog lights, but yes, it is illegal.

Bright bulbs in fog are about the worst possible thing you can do - fog is tiny droplets of moisture suspended in the air and they will reflect your lights right back at you. The idea of fog lights is, as said above, to be low down and illuminate the floor, not the road ahead.

no, people are saying you shouldnt drive around with them on, achieving nothing but constantly making yourself look like a chav and putting yourself in line for a fine from the police.

im saying put decent bulbs in them, wire them into the main beam circuit, so when you put main beam on, they are of some use. then when you flick main beam off, they go off.

I was under the assumption that regardless of colour etc all bulbs must be E marked? If they are not then they are not road legal, so above all else this is what you should check first.
