Hi,

looking to give my Golf's standard red calipers a new lick of paint. What caliper paint gives the best finish and is long lasting? Are the Halfords kits any good?

Also is it worth while spraying a coat of laquer over the paint once its dried?

The halfords stuff is quite good actually. Hammerite could be used, which is what I used on mine when I did them in silver, and that looks fine!

 

a good thick couple of coats of hammerite lasted on mine for a couple of years. i stripped the calipers down first before painting.

 

Reminds me of a story, a friend of mine a few years back put hammerite on the drums of an old cavalier. He coudn't be bothered to wait for it to dry, so drove off and it dried scarecrow stylee

 

Hammerite smooth from halfrauds will do you

 

I used Carplan Engine Laquor - £6 a tub from Charlie Browns or whatever they are called - never had a problem with this stuff, heat resistant upto 150 degrees celcius for prolonged temperatures, quite a lot higher for spiked temperatures

 

hammerite smooth as said above is more than up to the job done mines a year ago and its still fine

 

do not use the STP stuff, its fooking dog shit

i have always used the foliatech stuff and found that to be very good.

not tried anything else

 

My rear calipers are done with smoothrite black

 

2nd that. comes as a 2 part epoxy that you mix up. thoroughly clean calipers first as well.

i have used hammerite in the past and found it ok, although couldn't say long term.

red calipers are gay btw. imo calipers should be black

 

Lol, wasn't me who chose them to be red, VW did I don't mind them at all.

Anyway, is one pack of the Foliatech enough to do 4 calipers? It seems expensive compared to hammerite and smoothrite. However, ive used hammerite before and its flaked off after time

 

can't remember, i only wanted to do the front 4 pots on a cossie

 

if you check the small print on the backs of the tins hammerite has a higher temperature resistence than some of the specific high temerature paints.
prep them properly and it doesnt flake off.
