am i rite thinking the series 1 rad is the same as the xr3i????

Not the same, but the XR3i one fits nicely. Just move it a few centimeters more to the right side as was done with the S1 rad. I've always used the original XR3i rads in my cars. Cheap as chips too to replace with a new one.
