Default Could an old L1 ECU be mapped to drive an N/A Engine ??

Like a Pinto, Crossflow or Zetec on throttle bodies or roller barrells ?

Just thinking of a budget form of engine management rather than something like Jems, Omex, Weber Alpha, Emerald, Megasquirt to drive a pair of throttle bodies on an old Ford Crossflow.

Doubt it Neil, you'd need it mapped Throttle Angle vs Speed...i think cossie ecus can only do MAP vs Speed

IIRC Markk had his mapped for an N/A motor in his 3 door for a while. Dunno wether that was on P8 or what though...

But Phil, all these ECU's for Crossflows, Zetecs etc all just use a crank trigger to determine revs, a TPS to determine throttle position

Does a Cossie ECU not pick up the speed from the crank sensor ?

Cheers Neil

if you fitted the relevant sensors as well i dont see why not, but you would want a 0 bar map sensor to get any accuracy out of it, not point having one thats using half its voltage range for positive boost when you are only ever going to draw a vacuum.

The problem is with all this is when you add up the cost of it all the Throttle bodies, manifold, injectors, ecu, sensors, etc etc it can be hellish expensive.

L1 ECU's with a set of blue injectors would be as cheap as chips.... and there are several places who could map it.

Just looking into it.

Along with the Megasquirt stuff as that looks top value for money and you can download the software for free and map it yourself... which is nice

The newer versions will work on Turbo'd cars running up to 30PSI of boost...

I am pretty sure Mark retained Marrelli management for his N/A motor.....which would have been mapped by Stu and Kenny....

how much does it cost to live map a cossie ecu though?
this would pay for a new ecu and wiring,, map it yourself

its considerably cheaper , especially if you cant map a car your self , fter all , if you get i wrong its a new engine !!

i did have a nasp cosworth on L6 , i too looked at all the alternatives , and at the time there wasnt that many under a grand just for the ecu, so it was decided that MSD would have a go at it for me, the results were indeed very good , i used engine speed , TPS and a std 2bar map sensor, and stu/kenny did the rest for me , so basicaly i ended up with a fully mapped all electronic ignition system for less than the price of an omex ecu

have a word with MSD , they will help you a long the way , but i didnt have fuel mapped into mine , as i used a set of 48's so the fuelling was manual, but this is not to say it cant be done , was just my chosen method

hth

mark

Neil, the L1 does indeed pick up Revs from the CPS, that isnt aproblem, with throttle bodies you'll struggle to use a MAP sensor propperly and thats why people on throttle bodies use aftermarket management as they can map Throttle angle vs Speed, rather than Speed vs Density.

Cheers Phil.

Mark, so you what you are saying is you used the L6 just to do the igntion side of things...

Now thats interesting as I'm also keen on an 'Ignition Only' solution to replace the good old Lotus Twin Cam Dizzy I'm running on my pre-crossflow in the van pictured below.

Have looked at MegaJolt which is MegaSquirts little brother but its all a bit 'experimental' at the moment.

Thanks for the comments guys.. !
