big end bearings and big end shells are the same thing. They protect the crank from the bearing caps during starting etc (ie when the crank isn't surrounded by high pressure oil.

top pic there are bearings.. left 2 i expect are (well nannered) main bearings.. the ones to the right are big ends (perfectly fine condition)
the next picture down is of someone attaching a conecting rod and big end cap/bearing to the crank, a 'shell' is placed on the conecting rod and another in the big end.. they are then bolted to gether using appropriately named 'big end bolts' these are torqued to the correct setting which hold the cap to the rod once together constant oil lubrication makes the bearing 'float' and allows the crank to rotate inside the road without causing any scoring or damage to the rod/crank..
after time or if there is a poor oil supply the bearing will wear and instead of seeing silver it will go to copper.. this will consequent in a very noisey bottom end (ie loud banging when idling/under load etc) if left it will result in failure of either shell which is VERY VERY BAD

sorry if it a little simplified and if you know that stuff already but i though i would give you a little bit of an idea of how things work..
