Default Geometry People FWD car

ok,

one thing i have never really done is have then Pug setup right, mainly becuase i wasnt 100% sure on the settings it should have

currently (monday it was done) i had the tracking setup from 3.5 degrees toe IN to 2 degrees tow OUT

will find out next week how that it is, but it was a bit understeer city, so i think it will be much better

but what i want to know is what settigns should i be ruuning?

Toe ?
camber ?
castor ?

anyone know? or have a roughly right figure?

im sure someone will come along and correct me but fuck it, iirc, toe has a bearing on stability at speed and the turn in response, so is down to person preference more than anything. camber should be at around 1.5-2.0 degrees as a standard ballpark. and i know little about castor but i was under the impression the more the better.

Jesus Spikey! I thought by how fast your little car went that all this stuff had been optimised already!!!

by the amount of fast track and race 205's out there someone must know THE exact best settings for each kinda different track and style of driving and tyre etc etc...

dig a bit harder or ask else where mate

caster brings steering feel and weight, and gives you more camber as you turn the wheel more. Think go karts.

On a strict track car running radial tyres Id go for:

1mm toe out
1.5 deg neg camber
4-6 degrees of castor depending on what you can achieve by modifying bits to pull the top of the strut back, or the bottom balljoint forwards

on the rear you might want to shim the axle where the stub axles bolt on to try and get 0.5mm toe in per side, 2 degrees neg camber

I agree totally with Ali Olsen, thats exactly the same numbers that I would have said based on my experience with other FWD cars, possibly even a little more castor though, as much as 8 even would be a good thing.
I often run parellel though on the toe, even though slight toe out is probably better, I just prefer the slightly less "alive" feel to it when parellel, but you might find the opposite and want to go +2mm of course, its all about pesonal preference, no right or wrong answer, but Ali has certainly stated a good ballpark

I wouldnt want to go as far as 8 on track tyres and a manual rack tbh.

You may also find you run into issues with driveshafts fouling and stuff, my knowledge is vauxhall specific, but novas you can only get about 6.

Spikey only runs 195's so I dont think 8 would make it too heavy, you're right though that he will probably hit a mechanical limiting factor before he gets to that anyway so its quite likely to be acedemic!

Spikey are you on 309 front wishbones?
Cause if so they add a bit of castor IIRC and not just camber

yeah 309. Cant see how they would alter castor. As they are only 7mm longer. Outwards

Spiky, do you run eccentric topmounts? If so, have a look and see how far back you can get the top of the strut to sit. Should be an hours work max, redo the tracking and then do the trackday, soon tell you if you like it or not.

no, but its quick and easy and a good start, and the 205 isnt as easy as the nova for moving the bottom, so after this comes cutting the strut tops and more serious (winter) surgery.

I agree thats its a good start mate, I was saying not to do it cause it wont be enough, quite the opposite in fact the reason it wont be enough still is the reason that it will definately be better than any other position he can run it in on his current hardware.

I'd go for a toe of 0 degrees......as once on the move the deflection of the bushes will give it a bit of toe out, unless it's rose jointed already?

Id guess its on polybushes, and tbh they wont deflect enough to cause that. Id be starting at between 1 and 2mm (from a known figure) and having a play back and forth from there.

ok few questions there..lol

i have eccentric top mounts

pretty much to most camber like below

i did have RJ's ADJ TCA's but they fouled a few areas and was, un safe, so removed them and fitted STD 309 wishbones, though i'm in the process if putting a RJ on the std wishbone and will polybush the inner mounts

i dont think there is much room to move the eccentric mounts back on the 205, as you can see from the pic

really appreciate the comments though

Id move it back further spikey, even though you will lose a little camber

ok after next week,

i'm taking the front struts off to get them shortened, and will get the new ADJ wishbones put on and run maybe more castor on the top mounts and get more neg camber from then adj wishbones while lowering it a bit too

Cool, if you can get enough camber on the wishbones alone then put it in the fully back position on the top mount, if not put it midway between the fully back and the fully cambered positions.

Careful of driveshafts if making the wishbone too long of course mate, although on a lowered car its not normally an issue

i have 405 drive shafts as spare for that very reason, they are 10-15mm longer than the 309 drive shafts i'm currently using

let us know how you get on useing the setting you use, be interesting to find out the results,

i thought castor only gave a slight improvement in straight line stability but dift cars use it becuase it makes the steering easier to get from one lock to the other

ow well learn something new everyday
