I've heard of aircon on Sapphire 4x4s but not factory fit on a 3-door or early 2wd Sapphire ( I prepare to be corrected ).
I know they did aircon on XR4is and XR4x4s though so it might be a possibility it was a dealer fit or factory order on a 3-door at the time.
The Sapphire aircon cars have different holes in the bulkhead though

No mate was never fitted on a 3dr from the factory. I looked at doing this some time ago to my 3dr, and even bought all the AC parts (of which i still have), but having looked into deeper, it meant changing part of the bulkhead to house the Sierra XR4x4 condensor/fan assy i think?, and i just thought it wasn't worth it...although would make a top mod...

there is quite a substantial amount of bulkhead that needs "fettling" to get the gubbins to fit in for starters

but if you can find a bulkhead with the neccesary big lump in it it's possible to cut it out and fit it to your car, the granada's are more likely to have it than the sierra's, the lump is the same shape as are the hole positions

all the one's i've heard of that were fitted to the pre 87 spec 3 door cars of both cossie and 4i variety were all retro dealer fit jobbies

when they did the facelift and got the saph then a/c was an option

don't discount the early xr4x4's, these were the 5 door versions that did have factory a/c as an option, totaly different to dealer fit

the condenser is the radiator looking bit at the front. the interior heat exchanger is the evaporator

this shows you just how much more space you need, the fan on the normal set up is right next to the bulkhead, so you can see you need a big bit of bulkhead removed to fit the big box for the evaporator

the thing is mate, you need the aic con bulkhead to chop out the bit that the air con lump of plastic sits in that houses the evaporator

the thing is probably 50% larger than your heater matrix and so the box it goes in is that much bigger as well, plus it's got the recycle gubbins fitted to the inside as well which complicates matters a bit more

i'll see if i can get a pic of one from the garage if i've still got it but it's a great big lump of a thing that only pictures will fully properly explain
