Could anyone help ? I have a mk2 escort van that was fitted with a 16oocc diesel engine to a 4speed gearbox .I am trying to find out what type of engine it is as unfortunately this is beyond repair due to a piston coming out of the side of the block .

The older mk3 / 4 escort diesels were 1600 diesel

 

Get a pic but if it's on an escort gearbox it's probably the Mk3 escort diesel
You'll be hard pushed to find a 1600 diesel nowdays, an 1800 will be a fairly straight swap and easy to find cos it was used in the Mk4/5/6 escort and Mk1 mondeo and also come in turbo form
