My 2wd Cos runs 95psi oil pressure when cold and then runs at 40psi when up to operating temp. Is the pressure when cold to much? and if it is what can be causing it? Im taking my engine out next month and would like to sort it if it is to high.

Im using Silkolene Pro S 10-50 btw

40psi when warm at fast idle is fine

not sure about 95psi when cold though as that 6.5bar but i'd have a good guess it doesn't stay at that for any length of time

 

Mines 90psi when cold 40psi when warm at idle , runing a 4x4 pump though . Same oil so must be ok matey .

 

Its always done it, and its doesnt stay there for long, maybe 3-4mins of driving thens drops to 50ish. Been doing abit more research and maybe its got the modified bypass valve spring thingy..?

Oil pressure was the same in my cosworth with no problems

 

It's a bit high, but as it drops to normal levels won't be a problem, certainly better than the other way around with no/low oil pressure!!

when you say hot and cold do you mean idel hot and cold or normal running hot and cold?

there is quite a difference between the 2

 

wish i had these figures, i am pretty sure my gauge is cack, i get about 40psi cold and 12psi hot!
Pretty sure i wouldn't have an engine left if thats the right reading!

 

mine is 100psi when first started then drops to 65 when hot, thats on a brand new MAD 500bhp engine thats done 1500 miles

 

85psi cold idle.

Mine is about 55-60psi when cold idle dropping to 31/32 at hot idle ( 80 deg C plus oil temp ). Drops a couple of psi when fans kick in. That's on Silkolen Pro S 10W/50.
It runs slightly higher oil pressure if I run Castrol RS ( or Edge ) 10W-60 but there is a reason for that to do with the oil molecules

 

get it checked then as that is way too low for hot idle oil pressure

 

That is at idle, cold as in over night cold, and hot as in correct running temp.

Sounds like I havent got much to worry about then by what some of you are saying!

Yes its 90 psi cold idle , 40 psi warm idle , 65 psi running warm at 3k revs .

 

as said, pretty sure its my gauge thats dodgy, the oil temp one never goes over 50 degree's either.
Its done nearly 4,000 miles like that, i think it'd be knocking by now.

 

That sounds the same as mine ( posted above ). Don't think I've ever seen 90psi!

 

Im suprised theres such a variation in the oil pressures we all get. Is that jus down to pump and type of oil used then? I would have thought we would all have similar figures unless its a knackered engine/pump...

 

Depnds upon oil temp, grade,bearing clearances, and releif valve spring force. Pressure itself isn't too important, it's theoil flow through the bearings. Pressure saps power, for example the DFV makes do with 40psi and revs to over 10k.

 

'hot' is relative. if you change your thermostat to an 82 degree one your oil pressure goes up!
