Default 2wd Saph

Hi all, I’ve just brought my first cossie and it’s a 2wd saph. Just got a few questions if you dont mind.

It’s got a t38 fitted and it don’t come on full boost till 5k, is that right for this turbo?

Had the car on the rollers last week it made 377bhp but that wasn’t until it went past 5k, car is dead pretty much untill then. Was told the car is running very rich at idle but lean on boost think it was between .8 and 1 on the lambda.

I really think it needs a remap, whose best to go to for a level 8 ecu?

Also the engine was rebuilt for the previous owner about 1500 miles ago by Corten Miller performance, the car smokes a little bit of blue when I pull away when its cold and sometimes when I boot it and its warm as I lift off I think my mate said, is this something to worry about?

Here’s a run down on the spec:

200 long studded block
CP Low comp pistons (standard size) 7.5:1 comp
Shot penned rods and crank (balanced inc flywheel)
Cosmetic multi layer head gasket
Head skimmed with new valves
Cams BD10 BD12
T38 Turbo
Level 8 ecu
Group a coil
Ford motorsport blue leads
Samco blue hoses
Siemens black injectors
RS500 intercooler
Airtec Turbo cooler
Airtec Alloy radiator
Alloy swirl pot
Alloy header tank
Breather kit
K&N panel filter
Motorsport Developments map with switchable anti lag.
-31 actuator
Running 2 bar of boost
Stainless 3" Exhaust

Any opinions welcome, thanks in advance!!
Heres a pic!!

where in the UK are you?

peak boost at 5k and yes there is something wrong!, take it to someone who knows what they are doing

i suspect stem seals or guides if its a bit of blue and assuming the bottom end has been rebuilt recently (presumably it was done right)

dont drive it until you get the AFR correct; otherwise you will melt the motor

First off hi and welcome pal'

In the morning ring Motorsport Developments on Tel: +44 (0) 1253 508400 and have a chat as they will have your cars details on file.

Now if you just want to take it for a set up id take it to grove garage http://www.grovegarage.com/

or GS motorsport in collier row iirc.

I would recommend Motorsport Developments also, they will map your car properly, also they will give you a proper run down of exactly what you need to do to get the most of your car, i cant recommend them enough!!

miller3 thanks for the welcome, i rang grove garage in the week, was actually booked into have it checked over, but i had a little problem with the coolent hose to the turbo, anyway i was chatting to the owner and he said he cant map level 8's.

Defiantly giving Motorsport Developments a ring when open, bit of a drive to get there but if they can get it running sweet then its worth it.

Dam you guys are helpfull. By the way do you think i over paid for the car, i was under the impression that mint saphs were worth it, got no rust issues on the car atall and was supposed to be a mint engine, just had these little hiccups. Suppose thats part of cossie ownership.

You will always be susceptible to issues, the cars are around/over 20 years old.
There are many who map the std ecu's you have, but just try to stay off boost as said, otherwise you might be carrying your engine in a bucket by the time you get to msd!!
From your description it needs looking at totally from scatch, no doubt it will be silly little things that need seeing to, and hopefully not that expensive.
In the meantime I would check all the basics, ie sensor gaps, plugs, cam timing, boost leaks etc.

i dont think you got done over on the price really, its a decent spec and as long as the car is rot free then its all good

yeah dont drive it at all mate if you can help it; and if you do dont drive it like you stole it.

MSD is in Blackpool and whilst i agree they are one of the best in the country there are lots of people closer to you than blackpool

Tony at Turbosystems (he comes on here too) - http://www.turbosystems.co.uk/ (Staffordshire)

Norris motorsport - http://www.norrismotorsport.co.uk/index2.html (Derby)

Mark @ MA Developments http://www.apra70.dsl.pipex.com/home/index.htm (Berkshire)

Reyland http://reyland.co.uk/ (Birmingham).

A live map isnt always necessary, but obviously it will get the best out of your spec. live maps are circa Ł500

a set set up will set you back around Ł150-Ł200. i'd be inclined to take it down to Berkshire and see Mark for a set up (MSD reccomends MA Developments to set his chips up)

Matt

No worries pal

I take it that you would be running a 044 bosch fuel pump?
Do you have/or no what the fuel pressure is @ idle.. You should be running 3 bar with the vac pipe on the regulator and 3.5 with the pipe off' all @ idle

and with regards to the smoke' as long as its not excessive im sure it will be fine mate' you will almost always get small amounts' probably just the turbo passing small amounts of oil

ps gut some more pics up' looks like a nice one pal

Sounds like a good spec so well priced to me mate. Just thinking on the fuel pump side of things - you do have a good voltage getting down there don't you? Just that many of us have updated the wiring as the ancient stuff doesn't always deliver what it should.

I asked the seller what the fuel pump was and he wasnt to sure, so i need to find that out. Got no idea what fuel pressure is.

Will get some better pics up when i give it a good old wash and polish.

Just got it booked into MA Developments for wednesday, so fingers crossed, will let you all know what happens.

If you're in Essex, take the car to Grove Garage in Romford. They're excellent - very accomodating for the novice, and very knowledgable.

Well i went to MA Developments wednesday and what a pleasure it was, top blokes had a good chat with them.

Took my car out and did many tests on it and its fine, apprantly if the lambda is to long it can give fasle readings so thats was good news. Need a new fuel pump though as its still running a standard one :-(

Anyway the lag issue is down to the turbo and the bd10 cam so i got a few roots to choose from, guess it depends on how much spare cash i have i can go back to a t34 or go mad and get bigger turbo, cams and remap!! Decisions, decisions lol

Defiantly recommened the lads at MA Developments.

O yer' just re read your first post ... tbh you have loads of options, but really depends on your budget' a GT3071 would give a nice low down kick and still give you around 450hp with supporting mods

I have a GT3076 and comes on full boost just under 4k and will make 500hp

mine is a similar spec to yours... is the t38 a turbo technics one as some of these had problems with the wastegate arm bending which mine did and didnt make any boost under 5k.. had the inconel arm fitted and and i cant tell much difference in lag from my old t34..
when i took the turbo off you couldnt see that it didnt seal properly but i put a thin layer of white paint round the penny and closed it tight and only half the circle touched on the housing.... turned around in under a week and well happy now..

Cheers for the link LHD220Turbo, im not sure on the wheels either really want some comps!!
Gibbo i was told the turbo was brought from harvey gibbs still waiting for the recepit to tell what it really is.

Just wanted to ask what can be done to the head so it dont sound as tappy when cold and people have said not to rev to high as cossies dont like it, is there a way round that? Plus it seems to be using alot of oil and defiantly shoots blue when i boot it hard?

Cheers

Try using silkoline 10w/50 oil , i use it in mine and it's quietened it down a lot . Did 600
miles in it in one day from lemans and it wasnt even tapping when i got home .
