luke, ive just got an odyssey 30 from merlin motorsport. they are a varly redtop that was souley distributed to djm, and sold as a varley, but bjm done the dirty on the company so they stopped trading to them, and now rebranded it odyssey.

mine will be running the lighing circuit only but its the cranking amps you want

or so the guy at merlin told me lol

Just be warned that small dry cell batteries can be flattened very easily under cranking...

Luke, I run one of these on both mine and Lee's YB Westys with 044 pumps/ECU, Lights etc etc. No problems and widely used in the kit car race world.

Mine has been on the car for 2 years now and works fine mate. Lees about 6 months which is more like 10 years abuse and is perfect. You wont have any problems.

They are very versatile in that you can mount them in different positions and they are nice and small. Also wont leak everywhere should the worst happen.

I buy them from Knight Batteries which is cheaper than that eBay guy. £90 delivered so you save £7.50 too. You will need to buy a pair of the round post adapters for that battery too. They also sell all the mounting brackets too. Hope that helps.

Battery

Square Terminal Adapters

Round Post Adapters

Mounting Brackets

Stu

Every car I see with one always has problems with them, For me a big old normal battery is about as good as it gets.

Stu, your doing a good job at selling me one here.

Are yours and Lee's the same sized as the one in the ebay link above.
Just to clarify if thats suitable, for which in essence are the same sized engines.

EDIT - Oooh Just seen your reply with links, many thanks Stu .

This im not sure 100% on I just didnt want to buy a battery that was not big enough to crank and keep things powered.

The pc545 seems a good choice, what do you run on yours Andrew?

Varley Red Top 25 gets my vote. Know so many people running these and never known a problem. It's what I'll be using 100%

What kinda problems Mark. Can you explain? I dont understand how they differ really from a normal battery in terms of performance? I like Andrew says, once running its the alternator doing the work?

The PC545 is what we use and fine.

90 notes well spent as Will has the terminals too!

Last what? The test of time?

Well I am only 2 and a half years into ownership and use so cant comment beyond that. I've never heard that being a problem though in the Kit Car world where they are used lots.

Looks like Lukes bought one now so maybe we can drag this thread up in a few years time for an update!

Got a Varley in my Mk1 as well and one of the other lads has one in his Mk2 with no problem - in fact my "big old normal battery" went dead in the XR so I used my Varley in that for the Croft weekend - nee bother

The only issue is that if the alternator does fail you won't be able to run the ancilliaries for long, and if it's at night you won't get very far which is why some of the rally boys don't use them - a normal battery might be the difference of getting to the end of the stage - so, you takes your choice

Should be ok then. Going up a Amperage output if your running extra fuel pumps and alot of electronic items at the same time will certainly help also.
