Default Buying a Car where the personal plate is to come off

I'm in the process of buying a car at the moment, and the owner is removing the personal plate.

I've HPId it and the plate and VIN are all ok.

The thing is, he will start the process to remove the plate and have the original one put back on shortly, but I guess the DVLA will take some time to do this. I was hoping to go buy the car next week, but I guess I'd have to wait for plate change back to standard with the new V5/tax disk etc?

He says the DVLA reissue the tax disk, but what about MOT? Is the old one with prev. reg on it OK? (As it also has VIN number).

Cheers

He will have to send the mot off with the paperwork, they will send out the corrected version with a dvla stamp on the top along with the new tax disc and v5.

Just to add, the mot won't be worth jack with the old plate number on. When i changed my plates, the dvla didn't put the new reg on the old mot, so when i came to tax my car they wouldn't, even though the vin numbers were the same.
Had to go to the local dvla office to sort it out, or go and get my car mot'd again. Twats.

Done this recently.

But car was on SORN,

Went to DVLA with the New Keepers suppliment, MOT, Payment for new tax and insurance.

DVLA kept MOT and new keepers suppliment.

New MOT, Tax Disc and authorisation to get plates made certificate came through in about a week and V5 about 2 weeks later.

The MOT certificate is identical, but with the new reg and the testers signature forged by the DVLA!!!

i have changed over plates a few times
if the car is registered in your name then simply take the log book ,mot, and tax disc in to your local dvla office , they do it all there and then ,they print you out a mot, new disc, and they give you the green slip stamped with the new reg, they also give you a letter to enable you to have number plates made up..took half an hour..simples..!!!

it does however takes time if the car isnt registered and you have the full log book) to the person trying to do the change

Are you sure the new issuers name wasnt the chap at the DVLA with his signature?

The DVLA have CHANGED how they do it, you used to be able to go along and get all the paperwork done there and then.

Not now, they will give you a tax disc, but the mot and V5 goes off to Swansea. The mot will take a wekk to come back but the V5 can take up to 6 weeks depending how busy they are.

When buying my car a few months back it took 3 weeks, but my sister has been wating 3 weeks and no v5 yet.

You can't really buy the car until it is sorted as you will have no log book.

and sometimes the dvla ask to see the car the plate is coming off.

which can be a pain if you are up north and bought the car from miles away.

ive had hassle with the last 3 cars ive took in with plate transfers-i would wait until its all been done and the owner has the new v5/mot/tax disc in his hand.

Unless the Woman at the DVLA had the same name as my mate and was doing cash in hand shifts and my mates garage and using his id card for the computer!

Bugger

Thanks for the input guys, looks like I'll have to wait for it to all get sorted then before I go pick it up (deposit is paid).

Seller is happy for me to take the car, but I can't really as I'll have to insure it on old plate no, and will have no v5 (inc new keepers slip), or tax disk/mot. Sounds like it might be a long wait too

Why do people sell cars saying plate it not going with the car, but not remove the plate beforehand? Rather than keeping a buyer with a hole in his pocket waiting for weeks!
