Default Sorn / Car Tax Question

I didnt realise untill a few months ago when I sorned a couple of cars that it has to be doen every 6 months

I have a car that I remember speaking to DVLA about 3 years ago and telling them itll be off the rd but tbh done nothing about it sinse

will this be an issue with DVLA as I havent spoken to them about the car every 6 months?

I've only ever had to do it every 12 months when I get the reminder through, as per taxing a car.

Not sure to be honest. Back in the day, I had a car off the road for about 5 years and never had to SORN it after the initial time of doing it, but I guess the rules have changed.

First time I declared the Escort SORN I assumed I just had to do it the once, and did get contacted about it around 15 months later saying I hadn't renewed it, and had about £95 to pay, but I got out of having to that, but can't remember much more.

12 months a sorn lasts for unless you retax before the end of it

if its been off road and theyve not bothered you within 3 years i wouldnt worry to much about it. if your tempted to drive it and get caught you will be fined the backdated tax to when it was last taxed though.

You need to go to your local DVLA office and explain the situation, they will then arrange to SORN it for you, did it earlier in the year with a capri for which the last SORN for it had run out in 2003.
I think by rights they can fine you for not keeping the SORN notifications up to date but explaining face to face should sort it.

Non of the cars you have mentioned have your address registered to them otherwise DVLA would have been sending you reminders every year for either tax or Sorn, and then an automatic fine for not doing either.

If you've had no letters they don't know where you live.
But the first time you try and tax them or register the correct address expect a big bill and fine.
Unless you are talking about MODEL cars,

Sorn is yearly not 6 monthly and it's so widely publicised and talked about on Forums you must have been living out of the country to have missed it

dont believe everything you see or hear about the all seeing all knowing super computer the dvla have knowing where you are...
they didnt notify me about a van i had even though i registered it in my name when i bought it with no tax for months previous and after but displaying a false disc in the window that i hadnt noticed was false and was then driving it around for months after. no notice and no fine when i evetually did tax it.

im surprised that DVLA havent made it a monthly declaration of SORN just to cause extra embuggerance to the car owner in an attempt to make you tax it regardless just to avoid constant hassle.
