Default MOT Testers - Number Plate Question...

Hi everyone, had my car MOT'd today and had a query on ther number plates. Can someone tell me if there would be/is a problem with these plates and if they are an MOT failure or not please?

Ive got honeycombe background, standard UK lettering, standard UK size, border, writing at bottom of plate and a silver shadow behind the letters/numbers. I can post pics of the plates on the car if that helps?

If they will cause problems I will just get new ones, but if they are legal I won't bother.

Thanks

Numberplates have to be standard to pass the MOT. I forgot to swap mine over and it failed.

there are a few new rules that have been put back in the book but it would be a fail is there is no bsau number and having a honeycombe background for starters

All i do is sticky pad my standard plates onto my normal plates.... OK, so it looks like I have robbed the car and swapped the plates in a dodgy manner, but at least it doesnt fail the test lol

That certainly used to be ok, but I dont beleive it is now, however I do beleive they have to honour the rules as they were at the time your car would have been first MOT'd so you might be ok on an older vehicle, no chance on a newer one though.

Some of the rules are weird, bloke I know had a car from the very early 1900s and it didnt need front brakes at all and only had a hand operated rear brake, they were only allowed to check it "operated" not what the actual values were etc, so it was essentially impossible for it to fail.

Totally unsafe car to be driving around on modern roads in, and yet totally legal, lol

are the number plate rules retrospective?? ie the changes in 2001 means that older vehicles replacing a damaged plate have to display the gay GB logo etc????

Thanks for the answers. My car FAILED the MOT thanks to these number plates Ive had similier plates on my cars for atleast 5 years, so I was proper pissed.

Went home, got my old plates and stuck them on with double sided tape The bloke who owned the garage more or less told me I was taking the piss and he really wasn't happy He told me to restick them properly, so I put a bit more tape on and went looking for him. He came back after 5mins with the paper work and she PASSED He didn't even recheck the plates

Will get some velcro for next year and just swap them for the MOT as its too much grief otherwise. So Ł270 spent on TAX and MOT today just for the priviledge to drive my car for another year

Yes, all new plates have to comply, even if fitted to older vehicles, but of course there is no way of knowing when you fitted the plates!

Its a bit like the SVA rules for post 98 cars being so different, if you modify a 1990 car now, how does anyone know it was done before or after 98 for certain? Where as any car newer than 98, it MUST have been done more recently by default.

If thems the rules then fair enough, cant believe there are still testers out there so anal though. What stops you changing straight back?

My tester checks all the safety things (and is mega strict on those) things like slightly small plates he doesn't care about

The Euro logo isn't compulsory on any car.

For once, i think the government guessed the public mood and said "do it if you want" instead of forcing us to do something one way or the other.

Also the logo on it (supplier/postcode) has to be black and no other colour. No URL's are allowed now and i believe no borders (although its a bit of a red herring). Euro logos and now St Georges Cross' are allowed on the left as well). I think main dealers are allowed their companies on but again only in black.
