Default downturned exhausts

forgive my ignorance, but ive seen a few of these downturned exhausts on big power cars, and i know they serve a purpose - but what exactly is it?

this is the sorta thing i mean;

The tailpipe has just been bent or angled downwards usually to stop cars being flagged on track days for breaking the exhaust noise limit.

A mate had something similar on his Polo G40. That was hidden completely out of view though (sleeper look) so basically made the noise but you couldn't see it cos it was tucked just underneath the rear bumper But the above I think is what they are more commonly used for.
