What can be done about them
a level crossing is a level crossing... you cant make it into fort knocks.. even if you did something unfortunate would prob still end up happening.. these things always do unfortunately.

A lot of the crossings round here are having by-pass bridges built!

you can do something about them - get rid of them alltogether.

i work trains regular between manchester and southport - theres 15 level crossings on that line alone, all half barrier bar 3 of them - next time i see a car racing the train to the crossing i'll be sure to think to myself "oh don't worry, nothing can be done about level crossings" as we hit the fucker

i'm sure there are other employees of the railway on here - drivers, guards, signallers, Pway men etc, who will all agree that level crossings should be completely removed from service.

Cant not have level crossings, imo gotta ask your self why people are on them. As Phil said most got saftey by-pass. Though proberly due to our shocking railways it was working

what would you suggest was done.. IMO it isnt exactly cost effective to build by-pass bridges (im not saying it isnt a good idea though!)
and if the crossing has single or doubble barriers it isnt going to make much difference if a car is racing to get there anyway if it isnt going to stop in time for the train it wont stop in time for the barrier

Its the single barrier ones thats dodgy as people slalom round em.

Double barrier ones are down far in advance of the train coming so generally safe, not totally, but relativley, its not a fault of the train companies, just idiots.

If you think bypass bridges are possible at most crossing sites, or common, you having a fookin laugh

remove all crossings alltogether - they are dangerous.

or network rail could enforce a 20mph speed limit on all unmanned and half barrier crossings, and the signaller could caution all trains using a single yellow signal for the signal that is before the signal which protects the level crossing - this would slow trains down sufficiently to avoid an incident if there was a vehicle on the line - but why should network rail do that when at the end of the day its down to the bloody mindedness and stupidity of people in cars who attempt to cross while a train is coming.

the only way to ensure that stuff like this doesnt keep happening is to remove all crossings and replace them with flyovers/bridges or underpasses - i know it isnt exactley the best economic option, but its the only option.

Sorry i didnt mean by-pass i meant the trick thingy that detects if anything is on the track.

Stop crossings Bit impractical isnt it! lol And certainly Very Expesnive something the rail companies can afford. Imo people should be more carefull. I wouldnt want my tax money (if i paid tax) on building alternatives.
