I'm looking into changing the engine in my van, although i haven't decided what to yet it will be a ford lump. One major factor in my decisions though is how it will affect my insurance?
I know you see a lot of adverts on ebay that go like 'only dwn on logbuk az 1.2 so rate cheap on inshorance innit' but I fancy doing it the legal way

I assume lots of people have done this? How much trouble did it cause?

i bought a xr2 with a turbo lump in,the logbook was correct as the engine size didnt change,just an engine number change.

as for insurance, at the time i was with tesco and i think they were a little confused about it and they insured it as a fiesta xr2 (rs turbo) and charged me the price of what a escort rs turbo would cost.

all legal and above board

 

That makes sense, I guess maybe they deal with it case by case?
The online price comparison sites just offer the option of 'non standard engine' , which could just be the tdi version of my lump, or a V8

Only other thing is that it is a van, and therefore on a commercial policy... and they're generally a bit funny with commercial policies. Any van drivers done this?

i declared mine to the insurance but havent yet bothered with the v5 but im considering removing my cosworth engine from my bmw and fitting it to my escort van in the near future anyway.

Agreed, no point in bothering with insure at all if you dont even tell the insurance company what engine it REALLY has in it.

I'm with adrian flux and for my age they few fine about my engine swap.

 

Adrian flux were fine with my van. Admitadlly i only went from a 1.8d to a 1.8td but they didnt up it at all.

Plus i bought a 1.8 zetec van and changed the log book to be right and flux was fine with that

 

my cabrio is down as a 1600cc on the log book as it always has been, but is insured as a modified cabrio with rs turbo engine etc..

Adrian flux were really good, just had a modification form to fill in and send back to them.

Far too dodgy all the ones you see on ebay saying cheap insurance etc, you cant plead ignorance to a turbo or diff engine

 

I should really get mine sorted. From 1.6 CVH to 1.8 ZVH. Simple case of changing the logbook over, but i was concerned about the insurance. Im not being ignorant, just kinda put it to the back of my head until its fully finished and used as it should be.

Going to swap to Flux as well, so this thread helps me there

im with A/F i think there great, just i get pulled from time to time with no insurance coming up on the pnc but i think thats down to the cops as i paid out in full for the years FC
