Default Few gearbox related questions if i may

Hi all,
I have come to the conclusion my gearbox is f****d!
It whines like crazy in most gears and i think it could be part of the cause of my grating through gears and general vibration etc.
Now im unsure if it has LSD or not - iv been told if i spin a wheel then the other should follow suit. Mine does sod all

Is there another way i can find out if it is or not? as i dont want to bother rebuilding it if its not.
Also how hard is it to rebuild for someone who is relativly handy with the spanners? Are any special tools needed etc?
And lastly would a whining noise (that dissapears when clutch pedal is depressed) indicate bearings, cogs, both or something totally different?

Any help greatly appreciated

if the box is out look through where the drive shafts go, if you see through no problem its got a lsd, if there is a bar there is no lsd.
if its still in the car do a wheel spin 1 line no lsd or a knackerd one 2 lines u have a lsd.

If you are spinning the wheel and the other is doing f**k all then you DO have an LSD, it is just worn. If it had a std diff the opposite wheel would spin in the opposite direction. The whining will more than likely be your mainshaft bearing. These are normally the first ti go and are upgraded to a bigger bearing my machining the case to take it, heard of transit & IB5 bearings being used. I would leave it to a pro tbh, they are a real pain in the arse to do, much rather mess with an engine anyday!

oh and yeh if the wheel turns the same way u have a lsd.
Although the other wheel should turn the other way if there is no lsd iirc

if the whining dissappears entirely when the clutch is depressed, could easily be something as simple as the clutch release bearing

but with the gear crunching and vibrations and the like, it does sound a tad more terminal, when i took mine for its rebuild, i was told it tends to be the bearings collapsing on the end of the main shaft as a usual suspect

easy way to tell if its an LSD item if the box is off the car is to look through the hole where the driveshafts locate into, if u can see straight through, its an LSD item, if theres a bar running across, its not an LSD item

If your handy with the spanners you can rebuild it yourself the only specialist bit of kit you need is a gear puller to get the final drive cog off
