Is there another way i can find out if it is or not? as i dont want to bother rebuilding it if its not.
Also how hard is it to rebuild for someone who is relativly handy with the spanners? Are any special tools needed etc?
And lastly would a whining noise (that dissapears when clutch pedal is depressed) indicate bearings, cogs, both or something totally different?
Any help greatly appreciated

If you are spinning the wheel and the other is doing f**k all then you DO have an LSD, it is just worn. If it had a std diff the opposite wheel would spin in the opposite direction. The whining will more than likely be your mainshaft bearing. These are normally the first ti go and are upgraded to a bigger bearing my machining the case to take it, heard of transit & IB5 bearings being used. I would leave it to a pro tbh, they are a real pain in the arse to do, much rather mess with an engine anyday!
