use some grips or an adjustable spanner, the nut shouldn't be very tight

Sorry to hijack but could this cause the wheel to feel loose when jacked up?

Just jacked back end of mine up the other day and noticed you could rock it up and down and side to side?

Ah right, thought it might be but you could still spin the wheel freely so wasn't sure! I'll give that a tighten up when i next go work on it!

Cheers for help!

with the handbrake off you should nip the nut for the wheel bearing up gently, then slowly slacken it off till you can just slide the washer behind the nut when you push against it with a screwdriver hope this helps

Also put a new split pin in afterwards
