Default Escort 1.8Zetec High and erratic idle.

Hi guys,

One of our cars is a 1999 Escort S reg 1.8 Zetec petrol. It seems to idel really high, especially whilst driving or when stopping at lights. When stopping the revs seem to stay up at 2500-3000rpm but then drop back to normal idle after 5-10seconds. Also and more annoyingly, when you pull away in gear it immediately then seems to want to pull itself up to 2000-2500rpm, and makes things a bit jerky.

I looked at my Haynes manual and removed the IAC valve beside the throttle body and cleaned it thoroughly with WD40 but this has made no difference. There are no obvious damaged vacuum lines and the car has been recently serviced. Any ideas?

Thanks very much for all advice.

Gordon

I would've thought it was the idle speed control valve. Could be the speed sensor on the gearbox, easy to check, just disconnect it and see if it's any different.

Thanks Mal, I will buy another idel speed control and will try disconnecting the speed sensor. Do you know offhand where it is located?

On top of the gearbox, where the speedo cable goes in. The connector is by the starter.
