Who works in IT in London?
What's a normal IT job? Job definitions get more and more granular the larger the company you go to. Like, a Technical Architect is a 'normal' IT job in a company large enough, and that could be paying up to Ł120k!
If you mean something like helpdesk work, then I dunno, Ł16-25k on a perm basis? Contract rates have dropped up to 50% in the past 12 months though

I was contracting a couple of years ago when the rates were good but have been advised that rates have dropped a little. (still not thaaat bad). Our contractors here are still on the same money though. Perm. rates arent much different if you put all your benefits / bonus / pension / holiday into the equation. (I work in 2nd/3rd line desktop support).

I do 2nd line support at the moment, but its for a single product, that no one outside of estate agency will of heard of lol.
I have no IT quals (like mcse etc), so maybe now's the time to do something about it!!

Chris
precisely!
and if you work as part of a server team it doesn't necessarily mean more money.
I'd argue that the systems my team (desktop engineering/infrastructure) manages are at least as complex as most of the server stuff, and hence should command equivalent money.
cfoster I need a job on the desk at youre place lol...
good luck to all you guys that can get it. Infortunately i have no mcse, all home taught and am earning 33k which is good in my line of work.
also in my career the possibilities are endless and if i was sitting on a desk dealing with stupid office workers it would drive me crazy. (i see it everyday)

1st line support is notoriously known for poor pay even in london.
lots of jobs vary between 17-22k and youve got at least 2k travel that a lot have to pay out of there own pocket.

LOL.
I earn Ł22k doing second line support. Not massively over Ł20k, but over it lol.
SpeedX - poorly since my Linux PC decided to die a death and I've been too busy to replace / repair it

i would say that 1st line (and i mean REALLY basic) you're looking at 20k minimum in the financial sector.
i know people on 60k + 30%ish bonus, plus all the usual healthcare, pension etc etc doing what amounts to nothing much more than 3rd line desktop support.
I'd suggest starting out on somehting like 2nd line support if you already have some skills, get your head round some of the more market data related stuff and the general environment in this sector and then look to move into a more infrastructure based role if you can.
one thing to bear in mind is that most of the really good jobs never get as far as Jobserve ime. they're already gone to skilled people ion the market place before there's any requirement to advertise.

im on reasonable pay, im not going to say how much cos it don't really matter as I will always spend what I earn.
The perks my company give me are what makes me happy day to day, they simply treat me so so well and the opportunities here are massive.
I honestly love coming to work and you are really privileged if you can say that as you spend so much time there
pm'd you mike

Wow the way you were going on above I thought you were some kind of european IT director for a large corp!! Ł33k is fairly basic salary for anything but helpdesk in London..
lol exactly pa so when people say that sort of money for logging calls makes me laugh and I wouldnt say its that basic.
no It director. Im sure id have more than an x5 if i was Lmao.
Also get a lot of perks. upto Ł1000 bonus per quater which i get maximum every quarter. Go abroad with the company for the long weekend every 6 months all expenses paid.
i love my job so would never leave anyway.

Like people said above, get in to finance or Law
I cant seem to move up to 2nd / 3rd line without taking a pay cut unless I go for finance, but I dont have any finance experience so would be hard to go in at that level imo

you dont need experiance, so long as you're not thick you can pick it up as you go
how did i directly insult anyones pay...
And so was mine as so many first line desk support earn 20k and tell everyone they earn 30K.
im more than grateful and very pleased with my salary for my age.
As im sure eveyone in this post is or they wouldnt do the job that they do.
you dont consider 33k + 4k a year bonus a lot of money... Lots of people do....
you are obviosly a long way above mere mortals like myself.

In addition to the fact that "the buck stops here" as far as any desktop related issue is concerned, we're responsible for application packaging, deployment, removal, (approx 1500 applications over 2000 production nodes in london plus 2 BCP sites with another 400 nodes or so), license compliance, the look and feel of the desktop environment (fairly restricted in our case here), patching, reporting, hardware and software upgrades, desktop security including forensics, anti virus, IPS, and management/maintenance of all the various applications that we use to look after our desktop infrastructure. No doubt there's plenty more to add but that covers my day so far today!
and you manage them.... so you are the last line of support. That must be a tough job.
and the 3rd line support can earn between 40-60k? What quailfications do they require?
I would imagine a degree.
1500 apps i would imagine could be a bit of a headache over 2000 users (if thats what you mean)
