Default turbo damper

i'm trying to fit a standard 2wd turbo damper to support a TT38 on a standard 2wd ex manifold but the spring section of the damper wont fit as it hits the compressor housing before the 'body' of the damper can sit on the 2wd head mounting flange where the vertical bolt holds it in place. it looks like a smaller diameter compressor housing (eg t3) would be ok.

is the standard damper the same as the one used for a T4 (which i assume is larger like the TT38), and am i doing something silly?

The T4 and T3 have different dampers but attach to the same place on the 2wd head.
