24v Escort Cosworth
I have been looking recently at the price of escort cosworths, unfortunately it is still out of my budget. I have seen a few shells advertised but all seem to vary in price. How much should i expect to pay for a bare shell? ie no beams, windows, doors, bootlid etc
I want to put the 2.9 24v engine into it. I can pick up a bug eye scorpio for less than £500 running with MOT and tax, will i be able to use this as a donor? will all the beam, arms and hubs all bolt onto an escos shell? What problems am i likely to encounter?
I also have access to a rotton mk5 xr3i how much of this cound i strip to use to put the escos back together? so far i have thought bootlid, doors, lights, windows, dash.
The last thing i need to know is what box will bolt upto the engine? and will i need other parts such as shock and springs?
ANy links that might help feel free to post

When ford made the one of 24v rwd escort the size of the engine required some cutting and carving of the engine bay panels to get it to fit it also needed a custom radiator fan.
As for gearbox you need to use a mt75 that mates up to the v6 the rwd versions of these are quite rare compared to the 4x4 versions you can get from a 2.9 xr4x4.
The rear beam from the scorpio may fit (the 3door sierra cosworth used the granada item), but it all depends on how much ford changed it over its life. Seeing as the scorpio has a wider rear track than the escort, which had a wider rear track over the sierra I wouldn't be surprised to find some differences.
The front suspension of the bug eye scorpio was improved over the earlier granada/sierra/escort setup as it uses a lower wishbone, so the front cross member and anti-roll bar are different over the escort, however it would be worth while trying to get this to work.

How much different is the front setup? any pictures?
Would it be easier to use the granada rather than the later scorpio?

BOB engine will fit easy as its heads are shorter than the early one. But you will need to run it on aftermarket ecu or the early BOA type, i have done this.
BOB scorpio rear beam and front suspension don't fit. But the diff 7 1/2", rear hubs and brakes will fit a sierra 7 1/2" beam. Drive shafts can not be used, there too long.

Also is the diff a LSD type?
The only sierra fitted with the v6 2wd gearbox was the 2.3 mk1 ghia. You will need to get a 2.8 capri box or get a hybrid mt75. Frontcase and input shaft from the xr4x4 2.9 and the rear gear section from a Dohc sierra
id have to agree with much on this matter ,
if you cant afford a cossie lump id deffo go v8 ,
3.4 4.0 rover lumps will go staight in , and if your going rwd its even eaiser ,
plus there alloy , so weigh about the same as a pinto ,
plus !!!!!! once you get it up and running ,
SUPERCHARGE THE FOOKER !!

use any gearbox, just change the bell housing for the 2.9 so it fits the 2.9 engine. capri brooklands or 2.8i special drivetrain has an LSD with the 2.9 bell housing, this should be a treat.

having owned a 24v cosworth replica i would also agree that if you REALLY REALLY REALLY think this is a good idea, forget the 24v and fit a v8
cheaper, less hassle, better

Great idea. The capri has an atlas axle. No 2.9 engine had a gearbox with a removable bellhousing. only 2.8's had Type 9 boxes with removable bellhousings and the v6 type 9 has a longer input shaft so only that can be used.
Forgot about the Xr4i, that box will fit. XR4ti is different.

go for the type 9. and unless you are set on a escort try a capri of a saph, might be easier.
my capri held its own easily and never let me down the boa and bob bottom ends are supposed to be good for somthing stupid(check the chain guides for wear though due to lack of oil and plugs are expensive from ford)
Ive heard bad storys about the type 9 box(v6 manual box from granadas and capris(the door 4 and 5 speed) but i have side footed the clutch and given it death for miles and it never failed me just leaked a little due to the rear axle tramp i had pulling the prop out slightly.

Type 9's don't last long on the 24V if used hard.
Main and big end bearings are one bad point, the can go anytime after 100,000. I did a set at Donny on a 100,000mile BOA. BOA chain guide is another thing that goes, not a ford part anymore. BOB is better as it has 2 guides and these are still a ford part.
If i were to build another car up it would be Zetec turbo RWD. Oh and that would go in an Escort or Sierra

to build an escos to a half decent standard WILL cost you 8k minimum, don't fuck about with a shitty V6, go and buy a complete running car for 8-10k, it might be high milage and need a bit of work, but you will have a far far far better car at the end of it, and somthing that has residual value should you need to sell it on. If you can't afford it now save up for a bit, or buy a 4x4 sapphire as they are a fantastic car for half the money of an Escos.
