Default Overheating.........What Next!!

Recently bought 88 S2 Turbo, prev. owner running on leaded, converted to unleaded (optimax), general running seems fine, had timing adjusted, slight tapet noise, but give it some welly, tottally overheats, and starts cutting out.
I'm told I'm looking at overhaul on tapets, cam, belt, but due to mileage and year, really just general wear and tear, and should be replaced, am I going in the right direction with this.
It's my first turb's and loving it, I just want a good start.

is the head gasket ok? maybe the rad is blocked? get timing checked? get fuelling checked? give it a full service (even though that wont cure the over heating lol), check the thermostat, fan switch (if the fan switch has gone try using a 2WD cossie one as they kick in sooner)...thats about all i can think of at the mo

oh and make sure there aint an air lock in the cooling system, and no cracks in the header tank

that should keep ya busy
