Mondeo ST TDCI. Excellent spec, economical, roomy, comfy and quick and looks the part.

id say a sapph.that type of money would buy you a minter and if its only getting used as a 2nd car realiblity shouldnt be an issue.and at least the hold there money much better than most other cars.
but m5's are also very very tempting

9k would buy a 2003 Impreza STi... decent cars out the box, quite a few have mods so he might get one thats 310-330bhp which would be quick.

The E6 would be a bit more raw to drive though, so if its a toy that occasionally needs to be used to take kids and wife out then prob would be more fun than a Scoob.

Cheers,
Grant

Can pick up an E39 M5 for around that money too... although potential bills may be a bit of a consideration.

Audi S4, nice 2.7 for that.
Bmw 330d 204 bhp sport remapped to circa 250 bhp.
Evo 6, brother had TME, never been so scared, ever
And of course E39 M5.

Evo 6 for me or possibly M5 (I reckon if you look hard enough you could probably get a decent one). Or Impreza STi. Could even look as suggested above at Focus ST or 4dr R32 MK4 but out of that lot Evo 6 by a mile for me

fuck the doors Trist, Focus RS, awesome car for normal driving & go's like stink with a few mods
i think the scoobs & evo's are great cars but would be dearer to run & the focus would probably hold better money.

4 doors - usual suspects of evo's / impreza / focus st

Although as suggested by a few others E39 M5 also a very good choice - talking of which get him to buy Indy's on here - https://passionford.com/forum/showthread.php?t=280580

I'd go a supercharged Jag, S type R (ugly as sin but wickedly quick) or an XJR prettier but not quite as driver friendly.
Either way you get a 400Bhp supercharged 4.2 litre V8 and its a bit more interesting than all the German stuff everyone seems to like these days..

There is , on this site, what looks like a mint e39 M5-going by the guys description and the people he knows on here it should be mint, seems to be a respected man, it has 4 doors too

Unless a sapph interests him, you can buy a minty mint sapph for 9k

Probably one of the better sapphs actually fuck it tell him to get on to the rsoc and look for a nice one-----fuck the M5 this is a ford site

Edit:thats it above

it was a 52 plate and it was 18 months old when i got it driving it home from the dealership i believe it was the compressor that literally fell off the merc garage came out and got it from 6 miles down the road then i had it back about 2 weeks and the electric drivers window packed up when it was fully open when i was out for a meal one night in london so we had to go home as i couldnt find a space anywhere near the place the same day i got it back from them it did it again then when i got it back again it did it again a week later then the battery kept draining and they traced it to a fault in the main screen inside mercs exact words were "we dont know what it was but taking it out and putting it back in has seemed to have cured it!" wrong back again then it just died on me pulling onto a duel carriageway that was an ecu fault and apparentley that was common for that car and the last straw was when the engine management light came on and stayed on despite 3 trips back to the dealers so it got px'd in for a 55amg that my mate wanted from there and i swore that i wouldnt ever touch another merc again. As a foot note my mate bought one exactly the same year and spec and he had so much trouble with it that 6 months later merc gave him his original purchase price back for it, they are fast but the performance in no way justifys the outrageous fuel that they drink they dont handle well and in my opinion they are not a good car at all
