So BMW tested a car with a slipping clutch? The e60 does a 10.3 with over 500bhp I agree the 1/4 mile is high however
Edited to add the Lotus Carlton allegidly did an 11.5.
Nope, Autocar tested a car with a slipping clutch - I suppose they're at the mercy of what they're given with press demo cars. They did comment on it though at the time as they could hear it slipping and only got 12.7(ish) to 100 and the quarter was 14.2 or similar ( it was slipping worse throughout the test )....only a couple of tenths better than the old 2wd Cossie Sapphire.
So, they said they would re-test a healthier example when they could get one ....which they did and recorded the 10.6 to 100 and 13.0 secs quarter.
I think the test I've seen from Performance Car when John Barker from EVO figured the Lotus Carlton was 10.6 - done on proper timing gear. 10.53 one way, 10.62 the other

I guess the fact that the E60 M5 weighs over 200kg more than the Lotus Carlton is part of the reason that the extra 100bhp is somewhat negated in terms of being much faster to 100 - even though it is probably easier to launch than the Lotus
For someone who's done a few 1/4 mile runs, then high 12's all day long. 12.7 - 12.9 is regularly quoted on the www.m5board.com, with proven time slips.

Yep, I dare say they get faster with a few miles on Jim.
Mostly the press cars are going to be low mileage and
although the testers are used to figuring cars they only have a certain amount
of attempts to crunch the numbers
