just looking at a 2003 bmw 330ci it has 40k on the clock do you think this is alot to buy this type of car with? what the 3.0 bmw engines like (petrol) ?

 

There are pretty good cars
I had a 330 ci M-tec sport
40k is pretty low capable of many more miles.

 

40k on a 5 year old motor is nothing - modern engines can run well into the 200k mark if looked after properly. Also the BMW 6 cylinder unit is bulletproof aswell providing the oil is changed every 10k

Not much to check really just the usual stuff electrics, brakes, bodywork
Plenty about, just look out for the best one.

My old 3.0 M3 is over 140k miles now, oil level not moved a millimetre since purchase at 107k miles; higher revving higher output more stressed 3.0 litre 6 pot too.

I'm sure looked after accordingly the 330 engine would quite literally go on forever.

 

I've got an '03 330Ci on 78k miles.

It uses oil, but nothing horrendous. The engine is a peach, and rightly deserves the acclaim that it's such a smooth engine.

Look carefully at rear tyre wear and note anything out of the ordinary.

Check that the top end of the engine doesn't rattle excessively.

At 40k miles, it'll still be like new. I doubt you'd have any problems for a considerable length of time.

what they like to drive, i know they not setting the world on fire or out performance wise but do they have a bit of poke. i would be going from a 2003 sti and am aware its doing to be slower etc but i want a more comfortable car now but dont want it to be like getting in a fiesta 1.1 lol

 

Nice cars the 330's, but i have to say id go for a 330d over the petrol 330.

I THOUGHT everyone knows EVERY modern car will do 100'000 miles with no bother on the engine, in general.
Even a shit car you wouldn't worry whether it'd reach that mileage.

As said I'd have the 330d over petrol, remapped will give same bhp, and ridiculous amounts of torque, and still 50% more mpg on top of petrol.
The 3.0 bmw diesel needs to be tried before being dismissed as an old clanker.

 

We had a 330i - it used hardly any oil. My cousin had one and it was going through a litre every 1000 miles - all within spec. Similar driving. Seems to afflict the M54B30...and not the others in the family to the same extent. My M52 2.8 with a 100k more miles on uses virtually no oil in comparison being driven in the same manner

It's a known feature with them. I believe, as on the M5 V8 engine, they modded the oil control rings partway through production - it may be down as well partly to how they were run in
If you do a search for 330 oil consumption on google you will find plenty of info.
