Default Gearbox probs

The gearbox in my s2 is whinning like the missus and just wondered if anyone off here has had any experiences with the rebuild kits on egay? been looking at them for a while now there only £50 or so, so aint to expensive just dont wana strip my box down rebuild it and find out that there made of playdoh when i first use it. Would love a box from cts and be done with it but cant justify all that money for a gearbox, any advice or help of where too get a decent set of bearings and gaskets from would be great. cheers chaps

They dont if your shaft is worn to around 25mm, then it's time to get another shaft However, if it is 27.5mm then it will be fine

Yeah you get all the bearings and gaskets. You want a good gear puller set as fith gear is a fucker to get off but apart from that there aint any "special tools" you need. Makesure you check the mainshaft diameter tho as this is what wears alot on rs boxes

Nice one, when you say measure the mainshaft do you mean the one you can see coming out the gearbox in the bell housing (ive always called it input shaft thats why im asking) where do you measure it and where does it wear down? thanks for your help

No the other one the one your on about is the input shaft. Measure the end that slots into the bearing if its worn to around 25mm then its fucked (unless you can get a sleeve put on it) but anything around 27.5mm is fine

Im in the middle of doing mine and i want to upgrade the main shaft and bearing, i know the size and i can get hold of the bearing its just a new mainshaft and sleeve to fit the new bearing, but everywhere i try is so hush hush about where to source the mainshaft and sleeve they dont want to know ? or even worste case for now i would be happy with a new mainshaft and standrad bearing but just cant find out where to get one from, ford themselves ?

After speaking to a few gearbox specialist today i have found some bc 92ca mainshafts, and also found a stockist of the ina bigger bearing (55x27.5x15), so no sleeve is needed to fit the shaft as the shaft end that sits in the roller bering measures 27.5mm as standard.
