I imagine they are similair, if not the same. What else did they share?

They shared the same badge. They are both Ford's. Infact thinking about it, they are both Escort's too.

yer parts are smilar, but not the exact same, the compression was different, turbo was different but no major differences

And then you've got the late S2 engines, which share some parts with the FRST.

Main bearings are different, oil pumps are different, Heads are different(exhaust ports)

The CR for both the S1 & S2 are 8.3:1

I say there arent really any differences, unless the patten equipment used throughout production changed resulting in greater wall thicknesses. Would be nice to have two blocks checked to see which one may be stronger??

and i thought you knew engines lol , nah it means the mains as you said are different and unlike a s2 which has 1 solid and 1 grooved shell the s1 has 2 grooved so the big ends see oil pressure all the time unlike the s2.
And there not available anymore so you have to buy 2 set and use the grooved from both as the solid shell doesnt line up with the tab.
The s1 valves were also sodium filled or cooled ,tbh the whole engine was much much better the worst being the last engines h plates etc.

Oh ritey, i was aware of that just never heard it reffered to as a floating crank! lol

Im sure i have rebuilt a few S2`s that had groved top & bottom Gen ford mains? I know ACL use the solid bottom bearing, i was told that as this was a solid it spreads the load and is less prone to wear.....??????

would have been better to call it a wet crank tbh not floating as thats when theres two cranks 1 attached to the block with caps and 1 rotates around the other carryin the piston assembly .
never seen a (caspian)grooved s2 both shells unless it had an early block , imo race engines etc they all run or most run a wet crank i may be wrong ,or it seems a 3/4 groove, if you think about it its the big ends what always wear very very unusually is it the mains as the big ends get a pounding so to maintain constant oil pressure to them imo is much better.The main disadvantage is that it can make the overall oil pressure less which is something which is addressed with the pump.
My engine runs this set up and ive never done a set of big ends EVER and its had some beatings lol @ 2.3 bar etc lol and a splash of nitrous.

so what would u do if u had a 220bhp dyno'd s2 engine, or a 60k original s1 engine. what one would u keep and install in a s1 being restored?

gonna freshen it up with new gaskets and seals etc, new stem seals and probably overhaul cylinder head aswell.

The s2 engine is new though done 4000miles,

stcik the s2 in there for now then lol
but if u gona use it as a show car rebuild the s1 lump then swap them tis what id do
or seel thw s2 lump an then the s1 lump wont cost nothin to rebuild
