whats with all the stars dude?
if your skint dont do the conversion. if your ok to do the head gasket your self then go and buy one for about Ł30, its not to difficult to fit and your 1.3 is perfect to learn on. go buy a haynes manual and read it a couple of times then get cracking

exactly what engine is it, im assuming the 1.3 cvh, or is it the ohv?

also, does it have typical headgasket symptoms, what exactly has happened?

at your age, insurance will b bad, especially on a converted car, which makes it a percentage worse

i did mine when at uni, and even just the increase in fuel usage killed me, let alone the constant problems and money needed to fix them and keep it roadworthy. and that was when i had money coming in from part time work, plus threw all my student loan at it lol

rs head gasket will be no good, best to get the one thats for your car,
is your mate a mechanic? has he looked at the car?
what do you mean the oil has been drained?
did some one drain it or has it disapeered? is it in the header tank?

Its very unlikely to be a CVH as 1.3's are very rare indeed.
Dont waste your time trying to uprate the head gasket, it will make no difference whatsoever. RS gaskets wouldn't fit anyway.
As above, I'd give it a go myself so long as you can tell one end of a spark plug from the other you should be ok.
Ł50 should cover what you need - including the haynes manual, but not beer for afterwards.

EDITED!:
You are looking in scrap yards for a head gasket???????????

Leave it alone, give it to someone else to fix!

its no good going to a breakers yard for a head gasket, try halfords or a local motor factor. you need to buy a new gasket not used

IF - and I really mean IF it is just a basic headgasket change, you will need:

Head gasket,Rocker cover gasket, manifold gaskets
(Or a head set which will have all the gaskets)
Oil
Oil filter
Antifreeze
Gasket sealer
Maybe: Engine flush / rad flush depending on the severity of oil/water mix.

And a reasonable selection of tools inc. a torque wrench

I dont mean to take the piss, but if you are looking for second hand gaskets, then perhaps this job isn't one you should tackle on your own.

If the oil leaked out when it went bang then it's NOT the headgasket!
Some how you have dropped your oil?! So you need to find out exactly where and how it came out before you do anything else!

Nick @ m developments has a full working XR3 CVH engine and gearbox for Ł30 if you fancy it mate, drop him a PM.

He only took it out to build a track car with a mahoosive stupid engine in.

well seeing as it sounds like a 1.3 ohv engine, the headgasket swap is pretty much a piece of piss, as its a push rod lump, and essentially the cam is part of the bottom end, so very few things to disconnect and unbolt

but if ur diagnosing the headgasket due to losing all your oil, id say ur a tad off the mark, maybe i smacked ur sump and damaged that, or the sump gasket.

most basic thing to do is get it up on axle stands and stick ur head under, see whats leaking and where from, and then get back to us

oh and headgasket, infact full gasket sets dnt cost much at all for these, all my local motorfactors have always got me bits for mine wen it was stil 1.3 engined

if they just need adjusting, its a 5 minute job with some feeler gauges and a socket

but dude, diagnose the probs with ur own engine before buyin a whole separate engine/car

worth a few quid in petrol if you can get it mate seeing as the engine and box is so cheap. will transform the car after you being used to the 1300 ohv.

this thread is funny. Not taking the mickey or nothing, but it is funny to read.

Basically, if i were you, i wouldnt bother trying to repair it yourself... you'll only do more damage. If you are concerned that buying a tow rope costs money, then you aint off to a good start anyways lol

If ya mate built his car up from scratch/standard, then let him work his magic hands on it and you watch what he does. Get him to run over a few basics with you too, i.e a full service etc. Get the basics sorted before trying out detailed things like head gaskets and alike. If you are serious about this car, i would also suggest getting a copy of the Haynes manual. eBay that for cheap enough.

One thing about ya mate tho, he does seem to have diagnosed the problem without checking it out first. Just cos ya car blew oil over the road doesnt mean the sump has 'rusted'.... the issue could be anything!

Good luck with it tho mate... and if ya can get the 30 notes together, i'd go for the XR lump and 5 speed box, its a bargain that cant be snubbed!!!

Mate, no-one on here is taking the p*ss outta ya. we all started somewhere... even these boys who build 500bhp monsters for a hobby. Eagerness to learn is a good thing, but dont rush it. Learning by mistakes does come into its own,, but its better to take things slow than make those mistakes in the first place.

Like said before, good luck with it mate

Thats a nice looking replica! CVH too.

What actually happened before oil went everywhere? Was there loud tapping/knocking noises? Anything not normal??

Could be something as simple as the oil return pipe has split. That happened to mine years ago.
