I have got the VII FQ300 really nice car to drive, if i could afford it i would have the FQ300 IX, this is the one clarkson said was the better one, for economy i suppose, all bit it chuck it round the track you'd be lucky to get 4 miles to the gallon, standard 300 brake, easy enough to up the power with bolt on bits.

I would have to say the gearbox is alot tighter than my cossy, but saying that when i bought the car from a dealer, i managed to get hold of the last owner and he told me that he had a problem with the gearbox and had it done under warranty, but i've had the car nearly 3 years and (touch wood) never had a problem with it, the engine i feel is good, again smoother than the cossy

The fuel side is quite harsh, i'd be getting about 200 miles to a tank which is about £40

For 23k you'd be looking at a nice tidy 9, evo's are coming down in price, i saw a VII the other day, very clean, mint infact, 31k on the clock, just under 10k.

Her's mine:

And the new plate i just bought.

Jump on Evo Oz www.evolutionoz.net over here for a wealth of information.

I had a lightly modified Evo VII and an FQ400 replica Evo 8 MR putting out a dynoed 412bhp at the flywheel with a stock exhaust (road worthy requirement). Sold both but are formiddable machines and will drive hard until the cows come home. I entered the VII in numerous track days, motorkhanas and a few hill climbs. Biggest thing I had to replace was tyres.

Bang for buck, awesome machines. Even most of the non Subaru jacket wearing mates prefer the performance of the Evo's over their models but prefer the look of their cars.

Introduce yourself on Evo Oz, read through the stickies and you will find most answers on there somewhere. HTH.

i love the evo's all except the 7.its too plain for me.
my money would go in a 6. handle superb, very quick on the twisties. only gripe is the gearing.i find them too short and 5th doesnt like being driven at 30mph like my cossie so i have to change down.

the 6 is the only car i would replace my cossie with(for a similar sort of car)

im looking after this one at the mo

the only scoobies i would own are the 22b and the wr1.thats it.

He would never buy one. But maybe hes just wrong. Thats why i said im not sure.

best bargin buys now are the Evo 8 MR, can be had for as little as 11k over here now (and thats for good looked after versions)

The MR versions have better rod's, Cams, Turbo and will quite easily handle 380bhp & torque to match all day long

If your lucky buy a gunmetal version best colour there is add the 9 rear bumper too

heres mine:

The only ones to watch is the 7 as they knock out the clutch very easy and the 6 the rear ayc diff is weak as i had two of them (diffs that is) Do not know off weak parts on the 8 - 9.

But grate cars all round would have one again

As he didnt specify what he wanted the car for i just assumed he wanted a quick road car, which is exactly what the RS6 is. It doesnt handle as bad as you're making out, it'd embarass a lot of cars on track etc imo.

If he wants a car purely to hoon around the backroads then i can understand why he'd prefer the Evo, as theyre just great for that! Please note that they hump clutches for fun until a multiplate clutch is fitted!

well that the rumour mill at its best they only hump clutchs if you launch them and slip it at junction etc, mine done 28,000 miles and still on it original clutch and i drive it hard but i'm kind to the clutch and drivetrain
If you think about it mine running around 340bhp and the clutch lasting 4.5 yrs so far and 28,000 miles i reckon thats pretty good going i don't think any 4x4 cossie running the same would last as long.

i choose a spec c scoobie over an 8 or 9 personally.
there will be tiny differences in performance and you dont see anywhere near as many on the roads.

I own an Evo V, 365bhp/345lbft @ TheRacingLine

When i first got it and done a few launches etc the Exedy organic lasted 1500 miles.

Another Exedy organic, and no launches just a bit of sporty driving and that lasted 8500miles.

I then fitted an Exedy twin plate and thats been fine since.

all i found with evos were that they were very civilised. a subaru seems much more on edge.

Depends on youre viewpoint to which option you prefer

I hate my Evo 8..............

.......... no sorry, I love it

You may have noticed from my constant raving on about it posts!

15 k miles in a year, one track rod end replaced, cost £27

That's with near constant track use - I don't really use the car for a pure social drive - I drive to tracks, thrash it, then drive home. At 320 bhp it just soaks it all up.

Likes tires, petrol and services though, but that's fair for the use I give it
