blue smoke and rattles
Working on sorting my new s2 erst out, let me explain what has gone on and what i have done so far.
Ok well it was very temperemental upon start up so i leaned the idle mix down and it starts first time (pretty much) now... still neads some leaning up i think.
When it is started and up to operating temperature, when revved there is some blue smoke coming out the exhaust, not plumes but it is definately noticeable.
I took the air inlet pipe to the turbo today and noticed that it was covered in oil, all the way into the airfilter housing.... i cleaned it all up and while i was there checked the play in the turbo shaft.... there is definately some play there but not a huge amount.. both laterally and longitudinally... i cant really measure it but you can feel some there but not a great deal.
I then put everything back together and there is still some smoking there... also there is some rattling coming from the top end.... so much so that it sounds like a diesel engine.. I changed the breather pipes over and it is still making the noise.
Also the smoke is still coming out the back. I have done a compression test and it measured 9 bar accross all 4 cylinders.
Any ideas on advice and where to take it from here?
Cheers

hmmm, it aint a prob to be honest as ill just take it off mine... it still sucks though! What about the noise from the head? I am tempted to swap over my cams in the car that sounds sweet as a nut and see if that is it... i have been reading the tech essay archive and apparently you can squeeze oil out the lifters to stop it from rattling.. dont know if that will work tbh... fooking turbos!
9bar
Oh dear should be at least 10bar, 12bar if it's a fresh build.
You have some heavy ring/bore where if that was an accurate test.
All plugs out, engine warm (15mins running), accelerator pedal to the floor, 10 sec cranking, take reading, move on to next cylinder.
TBH with your top end rattle as well i'd just do a full rebuild if you have the money and time mate.
Seems like you have Cam/Lifter problems, Worn Bores/Rings, bottom end is bound to be next

pedal to the floor lets the cylinder fill with as much air as it can suck in to compress and give you your reading, throttle will act as a flow restrictor if left closed/idle.
But in my experience it doesnt make that much difference so dont expect much more when you do it again.
I wouldnt say they are fried, but just normal wear for a 20 year old engine.
Either way it is too low to last.

ill check compression of the spare and weigh it all up, you reckon i can do that by myself? i got a crane and all the tools, or is an engine change a 2 man operation?
I've done it by myself 3 times this year as some bell end sold me a shagged engine........ebay

Can do it with the box attached or not.... either way isnt to hard...just fiddly. Be carefull not to crush your brake pipes (driver side of bay).

ok this one has got a sloppy linkage anyways so im just going to do it with box attached.... the rattley head and the blue smoke is a pain in the arse mate so ill just swap it out with a newer engine... at least then ill have a starting block and a car that i can drive lmao!
yes i know but if the linkage is not the problem then ill need to have the gearbox too, i got told the linkage was the problem when i bought the car so it may not be that...
I'll give ya a tip matey if your changing engine and box, when you get the driveshafts out fit some new oil seals on the gearbox or you'll wake up the next day with a big pool of box oil on the drive like me lol!!!!
Think there only about £5.

tell me about it mate, I bought a grey one off a dealer and it was siliconed all underneath so no corrosion was spotted upon inspection, i did all the welding in the end, it needed new sills, front floor pans, rear arhces, gutter strips... the fucking lot mate.
I then located a mint condition white s2 off here and snapped it up, now all this trouble with the engine... ill give the grey one something though, it is mechanically sound so hopefully ill be able to get the best of two cars into one lmao... what a nightmare.. Im changing the engine as im fed up with fault diagnosing to no avail... i got a brilliant engine here that never lets me down so im going to use that instead of polishing the turd engine.
Thanks for that seal tip mate, ill get em changed over, you reckon they will sell em in Halfords?
Just hope i can get the engines swapped over in a day, im gonna start early around the 7 o clock mark!!

might get em from somewhere like partco or the like, I got mine off ebay. You should get it done in a day tho, now is the time to get rid of the ABS aswell if you don't like it as you have to disconnect the brake lines anyway.
My car has had new wings, doors, rear quarters, tailgate, both sills, bonnet and front floor as well as a full engine rebuild!!! Got it up and running and took it to get rolling roaded and it blew up on the way home

. Changed the head gasket and was ok for, wait for it..... 1 DAY!!! then the piston and con rod had an argument so a new bottom end was found. All is nearly well now tho apart from the 400 mile old turbo now being suspect, make ya laugh these cars don't they!!!

yes mate they do make you laugh, either that or cry! I love working on em and should have something pretty decent after I have a full day tomorrow! Its gonna be a mission and a half lmao! Love it!
You have got a day ahead of you!!!!!
I dont think you'll get it all done, didnt realise you've got to take your spare engine out of another car! There is always those things that go wrong and end up taking a lot longer than they should
But good luck! Let us know how you get on!
If you do get it all done then

im going at it mate like a bat out of hell... its going to be a half six wake up and a 7 o clock open the garage doors.. its gonna be a tough one but i should get the engine in the white one and running i hope, then i can wrap the other car up another day! I look well sad, everyone has gone home for christmas and work is closed, i been there every day so far for the last 4 days working on my cars! lmao
yeah im sure it will, thanks for that comment mate! I know i have the spanner skills to do it and am really looking forward to it.. i mean at least ill know what it is all about after doing all the work... If i remember ill post some photos so it can go in my gallery when i eventually get the car sorted enough to put one together!
