He has been waiting for his one for a while now(russia commissions them to be made!)its the arctic star russias thank you he was on a destroyer protecting the arctic conveys in WW2 also got his medals !it surprised me as he never talks about the war!but i get the feeling he wants to pass his experiences on before its too late!

He then joined the police after the war ended up in the thames division (the flag was from his boat)he was a trained firearm officer and high speed pursuit driver (cars)

my other grandad who is no longer alive never claimed his medals!i keep telling my mum to go get them!She thinks he got one for saving a kid from a german sniper

Ive got all my grandads medals from WWII and the Korean war. I'll be going to next years remembrance sunday with my Dad - you can wear their medals in their honour, so long as you wear them on the opposite side to show they arent actually your medals. ( i think)

 

Agreed. Would be even good if you could get him to write a story so can be read again and again in the future, passing on through your family.

 

thats nice,get him to tell you all he wants as i wish i`d spoke more to my grandad about hise experiences,but being a kid at the time i didnt want to know,its one of my biggest regrets in life.
