I'm having a few problems with my PC, it keeps freezing, nothing works, the mouse cursor doesn't move etc, after i switch the pc off and on again, it takes ages to come back on and when its loaded it runs slow for about 5 mins. it'll probably last about 20 mins or so then it will freeze again.

i did a system restore then a virus scan (nothing showed on the scan), it worked ok for a couple of days, now its started freezing again

any suggestions as to what the problem is? any help is much appreciated.

I'm using windows xp and avast antivirus. it hasn't been updated for a while tho as my subscription has run out.

first restart your PC and as soon as it starts to come back up start tapping F8 - select "use last known good configuration - your recent settings that worked" then continue to use it and see if it makes any difference, if not, could be Processor getting hot and causing crash (check for dust and shite in CPU fan) also check CPU fan and all other cooling fans are working

I thought Avast was free???

Download something that tells you how hot your running, like motherboard monitor, might give you a clue what is up.

Do you get any bleeps when you turn the computer on?

If it was over heating you'd get a message when you re-started the computer wouldn't you?

This will probably get moved to the computer room mate, right down the bottom

Is the hard drive clicking away like mad when it freezes? If so, just leave it and let it do what its gotta do. May be doing a big update or something? Also, try getting rid of any shite that you don't need on there, do a disc cleanup and a defragment, things should improve!

http://www.filehippo.com/download_everest_home/ download that and get the temps from it, screen shot the screen so we can see

Also avast is free, you have to input a registration code which can be found here http://www.avast.com/eng/faq-registration-license.html once done it will last 1 year, then just get another code free

Sounds more like a hardware issue than software...

Does it do it after a certain time period or after opening a certain program?

I notice your running some skinning program to make your Windows look different.

Here is my suggestion, if you don't have more than 1gb RAM then purchase some from MrMemory.co.uk - As much as you can afford.

I'm running 4gb in my Laptop now, only cost me Ł30 I think.

Run a scandisk and defrag on the c: drive, that will tell you if you have any bad sectors on the drive, and may make it a bit quicker. Wiping everything off and starting again could well be a solution. If your worried about heat, take the side panel off and put your hand on the hard drive.
